A FIGHT to save the town’s delivery office is on the hands of Hinckley’s Liberal Democrat councillors.

After hearing the news that Royal Mail was to shut the Lancaster Road office in last week’s Hinckley Times, Cllr David Bill (Lib Dem, Clarendon) has decided to step up to challenge the move.

He will present a motion objecting to the closure and seeking urgent discussions with the relevant decision-makers in a bid to halt the plans at the next full meeting of

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council on Tuesday October 25.

The mail giant confirmed last week that it would shut four delivery offices in Leicestershire and also move the city’s sorting office, in Meridian Business Park, Braunstone, to Northampton.

All of the delivery services, including Hinckley’s, would then move to the Braunstone site, meaning anyone who has missed signing for their post would have to travel more than 10 miles to pick it up.

Cllr Bill said: “It’s totally unacceptable.

“What about the people who haven’t got transport? What will they do if they miss the postman?

“It’s virtually impossible to find the place by public transport.

“It will be a real blow to the life of this town if this goes through unchallenged.”

Royal Mail has said it is making no compulsory redundancies and will work to place staff in different areas of the business if they want to stay in the area.

Part of the motion reads: “This council notes that the Royal Mail management and the unions have already expressed concern about the future of the staff and we share those concerns, but we are as concerned about the effect this will have on the delivery of vital post services to this area and in particular the ability of people to collect undelivered items of mail.”
