NEW PLANS have been unveiled showing what the former Barrack Road sorting office would look like if it was converted into a Tesco supermarket.
Royal Mail originally submitted plans to the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) to convert the former mail site into a superstore in October last year.
Those plans were withdrawn in May after it was announced that Tesco had shown an interest in the site.
New plans for the Tesco store have now been submitted to the WNDC.
Louise Gosling, from Tesco, said the development would create about 400 jobs, most of which would be offered to the long-term unemployed in Northampton.
She said: “We’re committed to investing in Northampton and we’re delighted that under this joint partnership with Royal Mail we’ll be able to offer great shopping for this area of the town.
“The store would be part of our ‘Regeneration Partnership’ scheme, which means a large proportion of all the new jobs would be set aside for the long-term unemployed, with a guaranteed job for anyone who completes the training course.”
The former sorting office has stood empty since 2003, when it was badly damaged by fire.
When plans to convert the building into a Tesco store were revealed to people who live close to the site in July, they were broadly welcomed by residents who said they were keen to see the dilapidated building brought back to life.
The latest plans for the development would see a first-floor cafe created at the new store and 400 free parking spaces created for shoppers.
Heulyn Gwyn Davies, from Royal Mail, said: “The old sorting office has remained dormant for a long time. We hope now that we’ll be able to restore it to its former glory by revitalising the site and bringing jobs and investment to this area of Northampton.”
Tesco currently has 10 stores in the town and is building a new shop on the site of the former St Edmund’s Hospital in Wellingborough Road.
Waitrose also unveiled plans last month to build a new store in Wootton; Aldi is working on plans to build a store in Weston Favell; and Sainsbury’s is expanding its store in Weedon Road.
The WNDC is expected to make a decision on the plan for the Barrack road development later in the year.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
