TRAFFIC chaos hit one of the area’s busiest roads early on Monday morning after a crash involving an ambulance and a Royal Mail van at Guyhirn.

The two vehicle accident happened at around 6am at the junction of the A47 Fen Road with the Play2Day turning.

The ambulance was on a blue-light call taking a male patient on board to Peterborough City Hospital at the time of the incident.

As a result of the crash the road was closed in both directions for nearly four hours causing traffic queues in all directions including along the A47 and also along Barton Road from Wisbech St Mary and also Leverington.

The driver of the Royal Mail van had to be cut from his vehicle by firefighters and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King’s Lynn with leg injuries.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We can confirm that an ambulance was involved in a collision just after 6am this morning on the A47 between Wisbech and March. The ambulance was conveying a patient to Peterborough City Hospital at the time.

“Another ambulance was dispatched immediately to convey the patient, who remained stable throughout.

“Both members of the ambulance crew suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn and Peterborough City Hospital.”

Certainly hope that they are all okay. Who is at fault though? As reading from another article apparently sources at the scene said the ambulance had been pulling out of Gull Road when the collision happened. :hmmmm

Looking at the picture of the ambulance on the back of the recovery truck, nearside is ok and the rear looks to be ok,so i am guessing as the ambulance pulled out of the side road and the damage is on the off side of the ambulance. If the ambulance was on a blue light call were the two tones going as well!!!!!!

First and foremost lets hope all involved make a full and swift recovery.

The driver in this accident came from my mail centre at Werrington Peterborough.
As far i can gather he is ok but had his feet crushed by the pedals.

Not much information is about at the moment but Rm have put the pictures of the crash on the distribution info board and warned all drivers to be careful when driving on duties, pretty much health and safety par for the course.

The A47 is a bad road for accidents in the P`boro area, there are a few dangerous junctions from farm roads onto the 47 where cars are over taking slow moving hgv`s in areas they shouldn`t, despite warning signs they have nearly collided with cars pulling out (myself nearly being a victim more than once).
I don`t think our driver is to blame judging by the rumblings amongst colleagues and it was just one of those random bad timing events.

I will post more information as it becomes available.

The problem with ambulances is that they often drive very, very fast.

The driver has a broken wrist and is getting his ankle pinned. Probably get a stage one for the pleasure.
