Leicester's main mail sorting office is to close

Royal Mail has confirmed the closure of Leicester's main sorting office.

The decision to relocate the sorting service to Northampton was announced yesterday, following an eight-month consultation with workers.

Four delivery offices – which take the sorted post – will close and move into the vacant building in Centurion Way, in Meridian Business Park, Braunstone. They are Campbell Street, in the city centre, Swann House, in Meridian, Wigston and Hinckley.

The transfer will begin in 2013.

The main centre will retain 100 of its 518 staff, with about 200 moving to Swan Valley sorting office, in Northampton.

About 200 jobs are set to be reviewed in the coming months by the Royal Mail, Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Unite Communication and Managers' Association.

Leicestershire CWU representative Glynn McAllistair said: "We're disappointed they've failed to keep the mail centre in Leicester, but we believe the decision to keep the building is useful because it allows us to retain some services."

Royal Mail Midlands operations director Paul Jobling said: "We have to reduce our costs at a faster rate than the decline in our revenues.

"We need to modernise our operations, find new business and focus on our customers.

"We are conscious of the impact this announcement will have on our staff in the Midlands.

"We are committed to doing everything we can to make these changes on a voluntary basis."
