I like the job when I'm delivering to a nice area, and hate it when I'm delivering packets to dodgy, scrounging scumbags on the take. Not that I'm judgmental or anything ;liar

Whether you love or hate the job depends on context. I don't think it's too bad, but I am still seeking alternatives. A man without ambition might as well be dead.

its a good job not the best ive had i like the physical challenge but like any ive had its changing ,i think thats what the gripes you read are about the changes not the actual job. once your out of the office and delivering its great rain or shine , i think a year down the road you will be the same.i personally feel all the changes are being made to make royal mail more attractive and cheaper to buy to be sold to the private sector or tnt, when that happens its had it , if you think the turnover of staff is high at r/m at tnt its far worse , the saddest part for me is the changing role we have , i loved my duty and went out of the way to help my customers where i could , you get to know your punters and for some the older ones i would be one of their only contacts during the whole day so a smile and a few words worked wonders, we help the community , i didnt mind goin over for the customer but never for r/m . if royal mail wanted to improve the morale and quality of the company then all they need do is restructure the management and concentrate on that area only , the management style is well out dated and there are to many of them ,and the quality of manager is piss poor, the job is a service for the community and not a money making m/c for some fat cat, and it can survive and prosper as a people owned company , they need to change their mind set and stop dippin into peoples pension fund and get rid of the gravy trainers :so there enough said

I have said this before and I'll say it again.

This IS the best job I have ever done. The craic with other posties is excellent, the stress levels are the lowest I have ever had (though I am pretty laid back), the rules and regulations are fairly straightforward, and the non physical side of the job is relatively easy. The physical side is probably the biggest shock for new starters but if you don't push yourself and know your limits then you should be okay.

The down side, no Corporate respect for the front line workers, managerial style that stalin would be proud off, complete lack of trust between the workers and bosses at all levels except 1st line managers, and even then the majority of them don't have people skills. The politics of CWU/Royal Mail and the disconnect which is becoming wider and wider between CWU HQ and the membership.

To boil it down to one statement - The job is excellent, it would be superb if the style of management was changed for the better. Lord Sawyer and even Sir Richard Hooper agree with me.

yup.its not the job,its the environment we work in/under thats the problem

Yes, at present the whole organisation is a joke.

Our office and I'm sure a few others, would be 500x better if not for 'certain indiviudals', that destroy morale and walk around abusing authority like utter bellends.

I've never worked anywhere else where I just want to get home everyday ASAP. The only good thing about this job is a half-decent paypacket per week, and making a few good friends in the office, although there is no time in the working day to even acknowledge them now.

I believe with a few tweeks (i.e the things we talk about all the time, jobs too big, bullying, harrasment, unpaid overtime), the place would be a LOT better.

25 years in and the job is not as good as it once was,i guess that is the same for the majority of work these days....
i still love the outdoor bit but the indoor bit is truly ruined by the lazier ones.i go for it every day and go home nice and early most days as the boss can see how hard some of us work!!!

If it's such a crap job why are people who have put in 20,30 or 40 years service still doing the job :confused ?

Partly because they have 20,30,40 years pension to think of.
Partly because 20,30,40 years experience at posting letters doesn't mean much in the job market.
Partly because it wasn't crap for the whole 20,30,40 years.
Mostly because, like me they are institutionalised. :wave  :wave
