SERVICES: Plans by Royal Mail to transfer its processing from Hull to Sheffield could cause problems for businesses, according to the city council's cabinet member for economic regeneration and employment.
Councillor Steve Bayes has launched a campaign to keep Royal Mail processing at the Malmo Road sorting office, where 160 people are employed.
He fears the move will lead to collection times being brought forward, impacting on businesses in the city.
He said: "If you have to have all your post ready by 4pm rather than 5pm, you are changing the whole pattern of your working day."
The region's MPs have now backed his campaign.
MP for Hull West and Hessle and former postman Alan Johnson has also written to the chief executive of Royal Mail, Moya Greene, calling for a rethink.
In response to the letter, Ms Greene said processing would stay in Hull until 2015 because Sheffield would not be able to cope with the volume that currently goes through the city.
Mr Johnson said: "It is important that businesses and organisations such as the council use Royal Mail if they want to keep their services here."
