Popular postie dispatches his last letter after a decade

Popular postie dispatches his last letter after a decade of deliveries http://www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk/story-13 ... story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A MUCH-LOVED postman has delivered his last sack of letters – but received a sackful of cards in return to mark his retirement.

Mick Parker, 65, has reluctantly retired from the Royal Mail after ten years of delivering letters, dodging dog bites and stopping for a chin-wag with the residents of Carr Lane and other areas in Grimsby.

And while most posties might long for a life-time of lie-ins, Mick, of Kirmington Gardens, Grimsby, has mixed feelings about retiring from what he describes as "the best job in the world".

He said: "Carr Lane has been the best round I could have asked for. The people have been fantastic to me. I couldn't have wished for a better ten years.

"The cold weather and the chances of a dog bite are obviously put-offs for some people, but I always saw them as part and parcel of the job."

During his breaks on his three-and-a-half hour route, Mick would stop off for a cuppa and a catch-up.

But just a couple of weeks before his 65th birthday, he was told by the Royal Mail that he would have to retire.

His job at the Royal Mail ten years ago was more than welcome, not least because it meant he was out in the great outdoors, but because Mick had been made redundant after 38 years working for National Railway.

On his final round he hated the thought of not being able to say a last cheerful "good morning" to his friends and so with every letter he sent, he posted a handwritten note letting them know of his departure.

The response from the residents was overwhelming for Mick, who says he is not quite ready for his pipe and slippers yet.

He said: "I got more than 170 cards, some of them saying I was the best postman they have ever had. I never expected this response, it has been amazing. They all say I had done so much for them, but I saw it as just doing my job.

"One of the things people want is a reliable, trustworthy service and a regular postie. I think people appreciate a regular face, one they can get used to and give them the time of day."

"the best job in the world" clearly this man should have been retired due to mental instability years ago!

Mind you doing a three and a half hour walk I guess it could be an ok job, can't remember doing a little walk like that it seems so looooong ago!

Good luck for the future mate but it says that you "reluctantly retired " from your job. I cant help but think, just be thankful that you were able to have 48 years of being in work. This will probably never be the case for younger people who are looking for work in these times. :wave

He's a top bloke, had the pleasure of working with him for years. He really loved the job and REALLY didn't want to retire but they made him.

All the best for the future Mick :Very Happy

The only thing that jumps out at me in this story is
During his breaks on his three-and-a-half hour route, Mick would stop off for a cuppa and a catch-up.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Yeah but I didn't say which revision  anyway, if his manager is reading the paper then he'll be putting a lot more onto the duty to utilise all paid hours :whistle
