However, Gordon Brown made it clear last year that public sector pay will have to fall below inflation.

Something seems to have gone wrong somewhere. Our system has gone through a boom time for probably about 15 years now. However, economies go in cycles and eventually there is a downturn.

The way I see public sector is that you never earn what it possible in the private sector during boom times, but you are less vulnerable during a downturn, as your jobs are better protected than in the private sector, which is partly to do with the strength of the unions.

It will be interesting to see what happens as a downturn is where we are heading.

In my opinion Brown should call an election now as if he doesn't he could be the leader as we move into a recession and then he will definitely lose.

As for Brown praising Thatcher, well it's not too much of a surprise as Labour is now more right wring than the Tories
Yes ,I've often heard tell of this magnificent period of prosperity, i've read about record corporate profits and City bonuses increasing massively year on year.

The bit i don't understand is why, if everything is going so swimmingly well, do we have record levels of childhood poverty;record levels of personal debt; workers unable to enter the housing market; the appearance of lifetime mortgages etc. ad infinitum?

I agree with Fozzie as the Tories are so divided with Lord Snooty and his pals being too liberal and the old school who want Baroness Barmy back , bring back workhouses , the ___ start at Paris , out of Europe etc , What was wrong with President De Klerk etc

. Instead of Tory Boom and bust, it's boom and bang with Gordie and pals . I stopped my political levy as soon as I read about Byers appointing Leighton, A cat minding Pigeons to me. Private Eye have got Brown sussed out completely, there's a series called the Broons based on the strip in The Sunday Post and the Prime Ministerial Decrees with Gordie in his Russian Army Uniform and AK47 . Loads of ex tankies like Mandy and ex trots , the policies may have gone to the right but the mindset and mentality stays the same. The best one was Prescott on this slave-ship replica sailing down the River Mersey , his flunkies were frantically ringing round for photographers for a posed picture. Unfortunately there wasn't any as they were all at Anfield for Liverpool V Chelsea , they'd rather have pictures of refs giving dodgy penalties than that drunken, oversexed buffoon. I wonder if Prescott had his cowboy suit on . Ironically New-Liebour kept him on well past his sell by date due to the splits in the party.
I heard Prescott was questioned about the Steve Bell Guardian Cartoon of him as the faithful Dog "Market"-he said he's done me as a dog , I'm not a f****** dog !, I'll f*** the b******s

Great article, and so , so true, there are no knighthoods, or seats in the house of Lords, for those who seek to help them who stand in the path of
unacceptable capitalism. It's high time that den of iniquity, the house of lords, was abolished.
