Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
There are no managers in Royal Mail delivery offices - they're supervisors.
A 'manager' would have the authority to make decisions.

Dave Ward letter to Mark Higson Oct 2009...
Dave Ward Aug 2009...That Royal Mail agrees to an independent enquiry into the bullying and harassment of postal workers and immediately ceases the use of unagreed HR procedures.
Appreciate that some think that some of the stuff on here is bull,but...Bullying and harassment is now reaching shocking levels as local managers are allowed to pick on individuals. Sackings occur at the whim of over-promoted managers trying to deliver unrealistic budget savings linked to unfair work rates which people can’t cope with.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
I have said it before & I will say it again.
Forget the delivery supplement, later starts & Saturday's and delivery length span.
The shocking thing about BT 2010 is not only did it not tackle or decrease management B&H in anyway it paved the way for more
With HQ in total denial and apathetic about it's existence now.
This is the real stain on our leaders.

Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
I must admit the constant drip..drip...drip... of "Nagging" (can't think of a better description) about how skint RM are, and the constant questioning over how much OT you've booked ...and was it really justified...is wearing a bit thin.
Obviously if an Office is booking lots of OT, due to the level of mail (sorry forgot it's meant to be dropping!) and the fact they're probably under staffed that should flag up a problem to the Area Manager.
It's not a problem just because Posties are booking lots of OT!
Thought he was having a dig at me and started to feel a bit paranoid, but chatting to some colleagues the Manager's been going around the office nagging lots of people. Must his latest "Morale Boosting" tactic. Are the Bonuses due soon?

Dingo is not the issue.POSTMAN wrote:Dingo is not from CWU HQ.With HQ in total denial and apathetic about it's existence now.
At least he will attempt to explain his position.
The silence from HQ is the real issue.
As you pointed out PM when there is a need to galvanise the membership into industrial action management bullying is a major issue.
When the dust settles and they are handing out the cigars...like magic it disappears.
That's selling the membership short in a big way.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
GREAT POST.......fishtank wrote:It's 10 years since Lord Sawyer said this about Royal Mail Management.....
Such managers are essentially supervisors - or, as they were described to us - “body watchers”. We were more than once presented with a picture of a front-line manager as someone who stands in the middle of a work area with his arms folded watching the employees and whose permission has to be asked whenever an employee wants to go to the lavatory or get a drink of water. That may be a stereotype, but in fact we observed some of these behaviours for ourselves.
Such managers direct the work but they do not manage the staff. When they come to apply the Conduct Code or the Attendance Procedure they are liable to treat them simply as punitive procedures to be applied mechanically and to ignore the emphasis on correction and counselling which have been deliberately written into them. When asked to carry out tasks which involve leadership and communication skills - such as conducting briefings and meetings requiring genuine discussion with employees - they are often out of their depth. They are ill-equipped to face the challenge of motivating employees at a time of rapid change.
The same attitudes can be found in more senior operational management. It shows itself in a refusal to correct or (in extreme cases) punish unacceptable behaviour on the part of front-line managers. Many senior managers, like their front-line subordinates, often have little concept of how to deal properly with their employees or their union representatives. Many used the language of “Management control” - reflecting a prevalent “command and control” attitude.
Has anything changed?
Will anything change?
Is this the real reason behind the fact that the business is a "basket case".
ABSOLUTALLY FLIPPING NOTHING I WOULDN'T PUT 95% OF THEM IN CHARGE OF A BAG OF RUBISH.....

Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
good question ive been at RM almost exactly 10 years and in that time ive seen my own managers go from mad to bad to worse. the mob we have now are so inept i find it hard to believe they have managed to gain employment anywhere at all let alone a role in minor management at a company like RM. one of the managers it seems is employed soley to come in every morning and wear a litlle shoe shaped groove into the floor, that can be the only explanation for him standing cross armed in one spot for hours on end not talking or moving or showing any signs of intelligent life. so yes they have changed but not for the better

Re: Have management changed in 10 years....
Sending text messages? Really! Now that does impress me. I have a mobile phone which I have barely mastered switching on. I guess that means I will never be a manager
