ROYAL MAIL is threatening to turn Holbeach into a “second class town” according to campaigners who are fighting to save its delivery office from closure.
Holbeach Parish Council and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) jointly arranged a public meeting on Thursday to air their opposition to plans to shut the Barrington Gate office and transfer all of its business to Spalding.
The meeting, at Holbeach United Football Club, attracted more than 85 members of the public, who were unanimous in their determination to fight the plans.
At the meeting, Coun Rita Rudkin, parish chairman and district vice-chairman, said: “The parish council will do everything it can to stop Royal Mail closing the sorting office. Not only are we concerned by the possible affect on the time the mail will be delivered but by Royal Mail turning Holbeach into a second class town.”
Postal worker Pam Hunter told the meeting that her and her 27 colleagues did not want to move to Spalding and said local businesses would suffer if the office did shut.
CWU Divisional Representative Adam Oakes said Royal Mail would not be able to provide the same level of service if works moves to Spalding.
At the end of the meeting, CWU branch chairman Andy Beeby urged the public to write to MP John Hayes and to the Royal Mail management at Peterborough to make their feelings known. He also pledged to hold further public meetings.
A petition against the closure has already drawn hundreds of signatures.
