Postmen urged to wear police uniforms

Home Secretary Theresa May has announced that postal workers will be asked to dress up as police officers to make Britain’s streets appear safer, writes Crispin Fisher.

The initiative was announced after research showed people feel happier when men and women in police uniforms are patrolling the streets, even if they are not real police officers.

The Home Secretary said: “Anybody thinking of breaking the law will be deterred if they see someone in a police uniform in the area.

“Although we acknowledge findings that show the effectiveness of uniforms is diminished if the wearer is sporting a bushy handlebar moustache.”

Communications Workers union chiefs want a boycott of the scheme fearing for their members’ safety. Senior shop steward Ted Gravel said: “Our members already fight off barking dogs, amorous housewives and risk severe paper cuts without attracting attention from yobs and dealing with people asking them for directions.”

But the Home Secretary says she is confident unions will drop their opposition when their members are issued with tasers and a shoot-on-sight policy to deal with Jack Russells.

Actors’ union Equity are also up in arms over the plans. A spokesman said: “Why are the government planning to use posties to pretend to be policemen when there are hundreds of unemployed actors out there?

“Talented performers with years of experience as cops in The Bill and Frost could help to make our streets safer. Employing them would free up hundreds of jobs in the services and cruise entertainment sectors.”

The Government says the plan will go ahead despite objections. However implementation of the scheme has been delayed after a mix up saw 10,000 Ann Summers Sexy She-Cop outfits mistakenly delivered to sorting offices.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
