A BOMB alert caused disruption at the Royal Mail sorting office in Chester in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, September 6).

A worker raised the alarm about 2.40am after spotting a white powder leaking from a package triggering a full scale response from the emergency services.

Cheshire Fire Service set up a 15m cordon around the scene and isolated staff who had been in contact with the substance in a secure part of the building.

They then called for the assistance of their colleagues in Merseyside who sent a DIM (Detection, Identification and Monitoring) vehicle to the Jupiter Drive sorting centre.

The DIM vehicle contains specialist equipment to assist in the detection, identification and monitoring of hazardous substances at chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incidents.

Within minutes the DIM, which contains an automated system, had determined the white substance was harmless and used in the making of an isotonic energy drink with the main ingredient being starch.

Watch manager Chris Durkin from Chester Fire Station said if nothing else the incident had been a good test of the service’s protocol for dealing with such cases.

Is it a MC or a DO (the media seems to refer to both MCs and DOs as sorting offices)? If it's a MC, why didn't they use the testing kit which all MCs were issued with to see if a substance is harmfull or not?
