Re: absolutely astounding decision
I don't condone taking sickies when no sick. But come on, asking for a day off 6 months in advance and being refused is.... well... I'm not saying managers are trying to fk things up, but find it unlikely he couldn't have given the day off. Managers being like this that forces people to go on the sick.

Probably had his home phone diverted to his mobile and claimed the loud music in the background was because he always has the radio on like that.andy2007 wrote:Actually. I'd say the bit's I've highlighted in red, are evidence that he WASN'T at the Concert. How could he be there to answer his Home phone, if he's at a Concert?shimmyrule wrote:Lad today taken in for stage one interview..........hes been here 3 years, never had a day off....he puts in for 3 days off........6 months ago, for an event..its denied.....and he goes off sick the 6 month later on the days he wanted off........produces a self certificate after 6 days off....and today is charged with using the sick absense fraudulently....basically the manager says even tho you have a certificate, and was handed in to the office on time, its not good enough.
They phoned him at home and asked him to come into work for interview when off, he said he wasnt well enough......and they are considering giving him a 0ne or two year suspended dismissal...............on the managers belief that he was at a concert on the days he was off..and the area rep says just take the punishment....![]()
No proof,just an aasumption.![]()
Especially as there was a 6 Month gap, between the leave request, and his badly timed illness. Not that any of us have any control over when we're ill.

Re: absolutely astounding decision
the reason we cant get days off is that we are understaffed beyond belief, in the last few weeks, parcels are failing, and agency guys and doms from outwith are working afternoons and nights delivering mail, even the phgs are taken off duty to deliver mail....its showing all the signs o xmas past lo.chaos...but theyve got ann autumn/winter plan!!!!
Reckon in the last year, betwen people transfering, folk moved due to grievances and folk sacked, or the squad thats been ill health retired, theres about 15 people down, and all days off have been denied almost without exception since afore the summer...........some folk are still carrying over 30 days anual leave, some from last year, and even requests for very early december are being denied already, so thats why people use the sick absense to there advantage, if i want a day off for a night out /wedding/fitba.....i want it for a reason......i dont want to be told "cant you take it in january, or march.they are takin the piss and i say f**k them.......

I disagree. Your attitude is quaint in an oldy-worldy sort of a way.bunkerland wrote:DirtyHarry wrote:How quaint.bunkerland wrote:I must be a bit old fashioned, because i tend to think that if you're not unwell then you should always come into your work! That way the genuine cases of absence would hopefully not be as harshly treated!
But this is the modern Royal Mail. Fook 'em, and take your two weeks sickie, that's what I say.
Nothing quaint about it DH,why on earth would anyone think they are entitled to sick leave when there's nothing wrong with them? Apart from giving your colleagues extra work to do,it's just downright dishonest!
As for being dishonest, it's small potatoes compared to the dishonest shyte thrown at us every feckin' day, wouldn't you say?

Re: absolutely astounding decision
I would say that management's completely dishonest right from the top, whether it's the casualness with which Moya accepts her 140k bonus whilst telling us the companies on it's knees,or the aloof arrogance of a Higson talking of a new understanding between RM and staff! From what i read on hear it certainly filters down to management too,far too many vindictive bosses with no man management skills at all!DirtyHarry wrote:I disagree. Unfortunately,we can't control any of these things, but we can control our own performance and still take some pride from it,that's why we should leave the sick leave to the genuinely ill and not burden our colleagues/friends with the work we can and should be doing.

Would;nt you think that denying us our colleague shares once promised is classed as disonest, because i do, so therfore me and my workmates intend to get our moneys worth, and if that means going sick when we are not, so be it,whats good for the goose.

Re: absolutely astounding decision
I would say both those things are very dishonest! If all staff did what you're suggesting, where would it get us and what new rules of conduct code for absence do you think would be brought in?triggd wrote:Would;nt you think that denying us our colleague shares once promised is classed as disonest, because i do, so therfore me and my workmates intend to get our moneys worth, and if that means going sick when we are not, so be it,whats good for the goose.

Re: absolutely astounding decision
Nowadays (if you need the odd day off) I would suggest you'd have more success if you just "swapped" your day off with the guy who is working the day you want off.
Just worked well for me for a wedding.
Thing is the newbie I asked to swap was even more chuffed! He needed the day off to see his girlfriend but hadn't even thought it was possible to swap a day off!
So much for communication from either the CWU Rep or The DIM!
I know some of the "Old & Bold" that keep a record of the "Sick" year and if they've got an Attendance left in their year then they'll have a couple of weeks sick (Helpful Doctor willing), Personally I don't care if I want the OT I'll cover it, it not I'll say "No Thanks" and someone else gets the OT!
What's the problem? It'll only effect you if you're not aware of your employment rights and let the Manager Bully you into doing more than you want to!

"Whats the problem?" Well DP,i've always liked to think of us posties as an honest bunch so clearly blagging sick leave would go against this,i just think it's pathetic, ringing up your boss faking illness, very sad really but everyone to their own i suppose!

Re: absolutely astounding decision
I suppose it depends on what kind of an Office you work in Bunkerland? If your manger tries to help out if you need a couple of days of at short notice, Family problems etc, that's great. However too many managers have their default setting at, "No way..You should have booked it last year...Not my problem".
Personally I can't afford to pull sickies but I know a few that do...Amazing how often that phone rings on a Saturday morning isn't it? The same manager that seemed incapable of managing a genuine request for time off at short notice also seems totally incapable of dealing with the same malingering characters that are abusing the system.

Re: absolutely astounding decision
For those that think it's harmless to pull a couple of weeks sick every year i have no real issue with it although it's not my thing but remember two things...
1.If you're ever off long term you'll only get 6 months full pay minus what you've had in the last 4 years so you could be 8 weeks full pay down to start with.
2.If you're ever on a Stage 3 your entire sick record is reviewed as part of the decision to bin you or not.

Re: absolutely astounding decision
some on here make me feel sick..you guys may as well steal all the mail, maybe you already do!
ive been at a small company which after much moaning i got them to start a sick pay scheme as weve helped the out as they stated up by doing free overtime on a promise that they would make it up to us if/when the company took off.at christmas's they gave us turkeys and at the christmas do's they would have presents for everyone..anyway no sooner did they offer sick pay , than for about 2 years all the new employees(high staff turnover/factory work)through the door did nothing but take weeks off whenever they felt like it..until eventually it was stopped....i never took any because i was never sick enough to be able to not work...
i am 38 years old now and i have only ever been too ill to attend work on three occassions twice with flu and really couldnt move and one when i tried to cut my fingers off at work.
you sickie guys are just leeches.no excuss..you no doubt will be the loudest moaners when / if it gets scrapped...it is not a right ,its a privaliage.
so if your genuinly ill you can still pay the bills
if you guys had some backbones you would just tell them you wont be in ...i do it if needed and magically they find a way to change my day off or give me my holiday

No doubt about it,i work in an office where the manager will always try his best to accomodate any reasonable requests from staff and personally i've always found it easy to swap time off with others,by the same token I'm also fully aware of what else is out there as regards managers and the problems they cause. But still, better to still keep our own conduct beyond reproach!
