Union vows to fight Holbeach Delivery Office axe

UNION bosses have vowed to fight the closure of Holbeach Delivery Office, and say shutting it will mean customers get their mail later and jobs are lost for the town.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says it is “very concerned” by Royal Mail’s annoucement that it hopes to axe the office and move its operations to Spalding.

In 2007 the office came under threat and a campaign was built up against the move by the union and local politicians and the CWU is now calling for the same support again.

The union says the Barrington Gate office was put up for sale by Royal Mail bosses without any contact with them and accused them of doing that to stop local people from opposing the plans.

A public meeting has now been set up to fight the closure after talks with councillors and MP John Hayes. The meeting takes place at 7pm on Thursday, September 8 at Holbeach Football Club.

A CWU spokesman said: “It is important that this meeting is well attended by the public, as this will be vital to us winning the fight to save the delivery office. We also intend to have petitions and leaflets out around the town over the coming weeks.

“The public can also help us by writing to their local MP and writing to Royal Mail at Old Street, London, to register their opposition to the closure.

“This closure is not in the interests of the public of Holbeach and will result in later mail delivery times and take jobs away from the local community.”

A For Sale board went up at the office, which employs about 30 people, in July.

Royal Mail has said moving the Holbeach operation, which delivers mail to customers in the PE12 postcode area, will provide improved working conditions, secure employment and a more cost effective operation.

Royal Mail says there will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of this change and it will reimburse its people for any extra mileage incurred as a result of the move.
