Unofficial Industrial Action - Stockport Mail Centre

As a consequence of unofficial industrial action taking place in the Stockport Mail Centre, Royal Mail have advised us that in order to restore a full service to its customers it may be necessary to divert work to other offices to clear backlogs caused by the industrial action.

This Letter to Branches is to advise Branches that if difficulties are incurred then they should be referred to Martin Collins, Assistant Secretary.

Branches are reminded that only properly balloted industrial action is legal and any refusal to co-operate with management over these changes may be deemed unofficial industrial action and therefore illegal. This, of course, applies to use of supplementary staff and levels of overtime to clear any backlogs. All such measures will be subject to normal consultative arrangements.

Does that mean that they can force you to do overtime otherwise you are taking unofficial IA. Or is it a typo.

no they can't force you to do OT. Just means they'll use casuals and offer overtime to people in other mail centres

This is a current dispute, staff walked out after a employee was sacked for calling somebody a scab, the "scab" was being driven into the office on strike days in the boot of a managers car so he was not seen by those on the picket line.
He was spotted and the "scab" reported the postie for calling him this and in due cource he was sacked, all staff walked out on Friday night, I work a short (10min) distance from Stockport and Saturday was heavily disrupted and so was this Morning, (Round finished in around an hour)

- I was well advised by a TUC Staffer that "technically " it's harassment but that Eastern Amal Area Rep was sacked in 2003 for calling a driver a scab. :lfo rang the Branch Secretary to NOT support him ,bullying if there ever was bullying & arrogance , the top appeals Mgr reinstated him after 6 mths as he knew RM would get shafted in Court and the papers would have a field day. If the CWU went straight for the IT route , RM would turn it into a test case and play trench warfare trying to spin the case out , the litigation would be expensive for the CWU which is exactly what RM wanted , after all they were threatening legal action over the so-called Trot plot ( remember the Guardian Front page re spying ) . My TUC mate rang me over this and said that company you work for is rotten to the core. He uses those infamous Leighton "Letters " in his lectures- he thought they were appalling, unprofessional and thought this nonsense had died out in the 80's , so if we're dinosaurs we're not the only ones . :lfo :cfo

Were there any witnesses that saw the scab getting out of the boot of the managers car? If so report the scab and the manager to the police, it's illegal. I'm sure the managers insurance company would love to hear about it also.

It comes as no surprise. To be a good postie, at least on the walking side, you need stamina, strength and endurance none of which by definition a strike breaker has, unless the reason he breaks a strike is because of a long held commitment to never striking.

I work at stockport do and up to 12.30pm today they were still out,all the vans that go back to the mail centre were in our loading bay :cfo :lfo
