This is indeed 'old news', from December 2003. However, I do believe it is still very topical:

Royal Mail cracks down on bullies

Demobbing after Second World War created a macho culture
The Royal Mail is launching a major crackdown on bullying in the workplace after hundreds of complaints by members of its staff.
Chairman Allan Leighton admitted that the Royal Mail was "blighted" by a macho culture and said physical and mental abuse were common.

There is more bullying and harassment than in any other company in the country, Mr Leighton admitted.

Workers found guilty face disciplinary action and could get the sack, he said.

'Macho culture'

Around 20% of staff complaints every month are linked to bullying or harassment, Mr Leighton said.

"It's a blight. It's not management to colleague, it's more colleague to colleague," he said.

"Sexual harassment is rife. Until we deal with all of these things we can't move on as a company."

The Royal Mail's macho culture stemmed from demobbing after the Second World War, when many ex-military servicemen joined the Post Office.

"Nobody's ever taken a stand against it in the past, it's been endemic. It's the one thing at the end of my tenure at Royal Mail I want to get right," Mr Leighton said in an interview to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Bullying helpline

The Royal Mail launched a special helpline in April for workers to make complaints about bullying or harassment, and more than 1,200 formal complaints were lodged, although many did not result in any action or were resolved informally.

The helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is staffed by trained counsellors.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) fully supported the company in backing a campaign it said it launched more than three years ago while setting up its own harassment hotline.

"In many case the bullies have pleaded ignorance or "fun". Neither of these excuses hold water any more," said CWU general secretary Billy Hayes.

"All our members have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work."

GOOD LUCK TO US ALL AND HAVE FAITH
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

"just get moved around "-like a Prison or moving the deck-chairs on the Titanic . Reg Holdsworth and his weasel-faced sidekick are the biggest boardroom bullies going. What we would call bullying RM HR , Senior & Area would call it "pressure". RMG are only concerned with covering thier sorry ***** in Court after Jermaine Lee, that's the only time they've sacked thier managers as it was too embrassing to wriggle out of and the EOC & CRE were threatening to investigate them. A third of the EOC complaints involved RMG mgt . It's all corporate soft soap to impress the Toytown liberals . Usually cases are twisted round on it's head to discourage people from complaining, it's like something out of Life On Mars , DCI Gene Hunt would be proud of RM's dodgy fit ups .If the CWU appeal/challenge / contradict " Witnesses " are found from nowhere with HMP Royal Fail. Problem is RM's arrogance can also be it's weakest link.Look at that faracial case at Blackburn , 5mths witchhunt , that Sth Wales postie turned into a nervous wreck about junk mail/trashy fliers -5hr Disciplinary hearing.
What a shower of S****!

Bullying is still rife. The Manager at my office is notorious for it. There is a fella who is currently off sick. The manager has bombarded him with phone calls. Then he turned up on his doorstep without notice and told him if he didn't return to work the monday after, his wages would be stopped. The poor bloke was so stressed out so he contacted the CWU area rep. The really frustrating thing is, My mate sent his B & H form off to gateway and they sent it back telling him it was a fecking grievence. Blatent bullying covered up by RM yet again. The thing is, the manager in question was moved to our office cos he bullied someone at his last one.

Yes madelin4 he is. Good bloke, good grafter, DIM don't like him. That's how the idiot tries to work. He'd do it to me if i wasn't rep. He had his fingers burned at the last office he ''managed''. Tried to stitch the rep up, Rep rounded the troops, put in a HR1 form and the DIM s**t himself. Took a long time of with stress.
For a business that's so anti bullying, their investigation team at gateway seem to send a lot of B&H cases back saying they should be a grievence

- they just want it "bottomed "-buried , RM have been slated in the papers for high B&H figures so it's managerial redefinition ; they are also covering thier a**** against ITs because a formal greviance has to go in. RM NEVER go against thier own , however though they've always been autocratic and above the law they are "challenging " people to take them on outside the Post Office . Even Amicus/CMA regard Royal Fail as arrogant , this comes from RM's board and senior mgt as everything is so regimented . :lfo :cfo That bit with the DIM is classic 80s/90's Macho Mgt , it's "justified " by "dealing with personalty clashes", what F****** personalty ? . We'd a idiot moved with the NUR/RMT over the zero tolerance alcohol policy -in a H&S meeting he said " We can't do breath/sample tests because we don't like you "-translated it means we WOULD DO!:lfo :cfo Most of that 2003 news article comes from The Sawyer report , interesting reading but you need Adobe Reader/Acrobat as it's a PDF . RM are only concerned with ITs & adverse publicity, they've always regarded themselves above the law , that constant harassment is illegal under the Human Rights Act -The right to Privacy ; unfortunately RM will only back off when challenged , institutionalised bullying . The DIM is only concerned with impressing Area & Senior Mgt and keeping them off his back. :lfo first two years were concerned with turning thier mouthpieces against the CWU, he'd them in on a rota basis , some of the "motivational " stuff was like Nuremborg . We got all the anti-CWU propoganda , there was orders from on high. Then :lfo changed tack and went for the privatisation route .
There was a case when a postie @ PDO Sth who'd been transfered from Wigan had Testicular Cancer ,and was very poorly . They kept ringing him up to sort on light duties , firstly he saw his old rep then the DO rep. He went ape-s*** and told the DIM , you won't send any more "letters of support" or make "welfare calls", when the Doctor/Specalist says he's ready and only then, otherwise we'll take you apart i.e. Simpson & Miller " . RM's managers have no REAL authority , it's then and ONLY then will they back off . The TUC got to hear about this from the reps and the word spread like wildfire .

-Your only due recourse is outside the Post Office that take or leave it -if you don't like it go attitude -comes from RM's very bullish, hostile and antagonistic board and senior mgt . Leighton didn't have the DIMs in at HQ for nothing .The DIM would S*** himself , RM would have been shafted in a IT, they're on fixed term contracts ,appraisals etc, Snr mgt would turn on him for leading RM up the garden path , just a bullying s****hawk, they don't /can't think things through , that's their problem , F*** "em all ! :lfo :cfo All these crocodile tears b******t about we've tried to improve morale ,given them bonuses ; got the B&H policy in , We don't/can't understand -S***!

You are spot on Carla.

These two are purely and simply businessmen motivated by profit and not by the willingness to give a service to the public. We should have executives paid by the Government to run Royal Mail as a service and paid accordingly.

I've often heard it said that in order to get top flight executives you have to pay a high price - well I wouldn't exactly say his pair have cracked the flags with their blistering performance - and our jobs are far too high a price to pay for this pair of pillocks.

They are not trying to run a business they are trying to asset strip it and the only ones that are trying to stop them is the Union and us posties.
