This is a difficult one James.

I appreciate what you are saying but you are paid to work a certain amount of hours and that's what you should do.

You will find that during periods of strikes you will be inconvenienced as I and many others have been.

For example we had a strike on Friday only to find on the Saturday that we had a full days work to take out and a later finish than normal.

I understand that you have a life and want to make the most of it but the old saying no pain no gain comes to mind as if we are not prepared to be inconvenienced then basically RM have us by the balls.

I realise that I am paid to do the job but it is not me inconceniencing them its the other way round, My round today was ready at 7.00am, so went in at that time as I got a call of my driver who said to get in early or I wouldnt be able to get a lift, he is off tommorow so am not sure what time to go in. On Saturday I went in at my normal time of 9.00am and nobody was there apart from 1 manager who said he couldnt take me out as he was busy and the guy in the office where people collect the parcels and specials etc. I was sat there till 11.00am waiting for a lift even though I was ready to go out at 9.20am. In the end I had to take 2 bags on my bike and then cut off at 1pm. I dont like doing this as the customers dont realise that it is not my fault but most dont realise the way some DOM run the offices. In the end I want to make everyone happy and if that means going in early to get a lift then I will always try to do that. It is only on these days where there is no mail I want to do this as its pointless me taking bags back when there is hardly any mail to deliver in the first place. I joined RM because I thought I could provide a good service to the customers but it seems I am coming up against stumbling blocks all the way and most of it is down to DOM's who cant be arsed to help or dont care less.

Scabb

Post by JAMESMARSH1980 »

No mate never Scabbed, My Grandad died shortly after I joined RM and one of the last things he said to me was never bocome a "Blackleg" as he called them, he used to work for RM in the 70's and told me always stand shoulder to shoulder with the Union and I will always do this. All I want to do is make the job easier for myself and provide the best service I can for the customers, I dont want to be dragged down by the powers above and will fight tooth and nail to do this. They dont seem to care about how long I'm waiting to go out just as long as the post is delivered but why should I sit around like a clone of a DOM drinking Coffee and smoking myself silly, I would rather get the job done, keep the customers happy and have a life outside RM and not go home hating the job and the customers thinking I'm a useless postman.

I see this is a difficult issue mate.

I could suggest maybe asking a colleague you are friendly with for his mobile number so you could phone him and find out the situation.

I do not recommend having to rely on the screws or any other bullshit official source for info as this is giving them power over you which will encourage them to abuse.

You will find that most DOMs are only interested in clearing out the work from the office and what happens after that isn't their problem so it is best to work with your colleagues to get the best out of the job.

Admittedly some of then can be selfish as well but you will have to use your judgement as there are some good people out there.

Origin of the Term Blackleg

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

Blackleg Miner is a 19th Century English folk song, originally from Northumberland (as can be deduced from the dialect in the song and the references in it to the villages of Seghill and Seaton Delaval).

It is not entirely clear how old the song is, although it is thought to have been written either in the late 19th or early 20th Century. Richard Thompson, who released a version of it in 2006, dates it as early as the first half of the 19th Century. However, if this was true, it must have been translated into more modern English, as the lyrics would not have been part of the language of 19th Century Northumberland.

The lyrics, which are traditional depict the aggressive stance against strikebreakers adopted by collectivised strikers - the term blackleg being an older word for scab. (Britain's mining sector has always been heavily unionised and strikes could cause bitterness both within and between pit communities).

For a period in the 1960s and 1970s, the song's aggressive lyrics were ignored and it became a common feature of many folk music societies. However, the UK miners' strike (1984-1985) saw striking miners using the song to intimidate those who continued to work.

Thereafter, playing the song became a political statement in support of the strike and many folk clubs avoided the song due to its description of violence. This was counterbalanced by an increase in bands that played the song. The most notorious of these was that by Steeleye Span, who played the song in Nottingham - an area that had seen a lot of violence during the strike - in 1986.

Other artists to have played this song include Ryan's Fancy, Lloyd, Smoky Finish and Clatterbone, Len Wallace, Seven Nations, Steeleye Span, the Angelic Upstarts as well as Richard Thompson.

[edit] Lyrics

It's in the evening after dark,
When the blackleg miner creeps to work,
With his moleskin pants and dirty shirt,
There goes the blackleg miner!

Well he grabs his duds and down he goes
To hew the coal that lies below,
There's not a woman in this town-row
Will look at the blackleg miner.

Oh, Delaval is a terrible place.
They rub wet clay in the blackleg's face,
And around the heaps they run a foot race,
To catch the blackleg miner!

So, dinna gang near the Seghill mine.
Across the way they stretch a line,
To catch the throat and break the spine
Of the dirty blackleg miner.

They grab his duds and his pick as well,
And they hoy them down the pit of hell.
Down you go, and fare you well,
You dirty blackleg miner!

Oh, it's in the evening after dark,
When the blackleg miner creeps to work,
With his moleskin pants and dirty shirt,
There goes the blackleg miner!

So join the union while you may.
Don't wait till your dying day,
For that may not be far away,
You dirty blackleg miner!

What I meant by no pain no gain is RM will use every tactic in the book to stitch us up and make life hard for us and I can understand someone new coming into the business might think what the feck is this all about? I am only here for a part time job and I don't need all this s**t.

What I was trying to say was that any progress we make will be at a serious short term inconvenience and hassle whether that be in increased workload around the strikes or lost pay we will have to suffer these or RM will just see us as weak and will win every time.

I do understand what you're going through James as I have been a new starter myself and found that the DOMs didn't give a s**t as long as the work went out.

James, when you say you carried to bags on your bike, did you mean two bags at the same time? I only mention this as if you have an accient, they'll do whatever they can to rob you of any compensation and carrying two bags would play into their hands.
