Royal Mail wants to gag post offices.

Post by NEWS »

NORTHERN isles MP Alistair Carmichael has hit out at plans to gag sub postmasters from revealing if their post offices face the axe.

The Royal Mail plans to close 2,500 post offices to save money. This represents between 13 per cent and 23 per cent of sub post offices in each area, with Orkney and Shetland in the same area as the Western Isles.

Yesterday (Thursday) Mr Carmichael revealed that the Royal Mail is now demanding that sub postmasters in each area sign confidentiality agreements before they are consulted on whether they should close.

He said this would leave customers in the dark forthree months and deny post offices the chances to consult with politicians about what is ahead for them.

Speaking after attending a briefing in Aberdeen from Royal Mail executives, Mr Carmichael said: "It is naive in the extreme to think that this information can be kept from the public for three months. Local people have a right to know which post offices could close.

"Any sub-postmaster who is told that their post office could be closed should be able to go to their MP, MSP or councillor to raise their concerns. It is out of order for the Post Office to insist that they sign a confidentiality agreement.

"No one disputes the fact that the Post Office has a right to commercial confidentiality. However, this is a step too far. I fear that by trying to gag sub-postmasters Royal Mail is attempting to stop proper debate about which post offices should stay open."

Its good to see that Royal Mail are starting to get bad press, well at least the bosses, long may it continue.

I wonder if they built a bunker at RM HQ yet.
