MP under fire in mail dispute

AN MP has come under fire for not supporting postmen as they battle to save Bourne’s sorting office from being moved.

The Communication Workers Union has hit out at Bourne MP Nick Boles for not getting behind their bid to keep Bourne’s sorting office in the town.

Royal Mail is proposing to move the sorting office operations from their current site in West Street by early next year and postal workers are fighting against the plans. The union says the business is proposing to move the site to Spalding.

MP Mr Boles says it is “hugely regrettable” for the people working there but feels Royal Mail needs to modernise in order to survive the challenges posed by e-mail and will not support the union.

The union sent a letter to the MP asking for support and says that it has not received a reply.

Mr Boles says the letter did not ask for a reply but he is checking some factual information mentioned in the letter on delivery times with Royal Mail.

Union area representative Mark Cooke said: “The fact that he has not (replied) is disgraceful.

“He was voted in by these people and has an obligation to at least give a response, even if it is not a response we want to hear.”

Mr Boles said: “I am not going to side with people who I consider to be acting against the interests of Royal Mail and a universal postal service. Royal Mail management feels the need to rationalise and reorganise the way their business is run to make it more commercially viable, which is hugely regrettable for the people employed there.”

He said he has responded to letters sent in by individuals.

More than 200 people have signed the petition being run by postal staff

This was published in November 2010 and the decision to close Bourne has already been reversed.
