On this day in 1868 a correspondent in the Hampshire Times complained that the inhabitants of Milton, Portsmouth, east of the Artillery Arms on the old canal, had suddenly been ‘cut off from the postal delivery, after having enjoyed that accommodation for 14 years’.

The writer pointed out that there was a thriving fishing community there with at least 28 houses, a pub and a landing place that was busy all year round.

He said that the postmaster general had not replied to a letter of complaint and the Portsmouth postmaster had said that delivering to that area was not profitable – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
