ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES

Been in the job 4 weeks now. Reading this thread wouldve been good at the start!

But anyway, people keep going on about weighing bags, but I don't think ive ever seen anyone do that, or been told anything about this. I'm convinced im taking bags way over the weight out, and my route is a bitch, all up and down steps and hills and some flats to. Everytime I've mentioned I've just been told to take it - or split it down which would mean walking back to a pouch box all the time. (Another thing is they keep putting off the driver conversion or training or whatever its called, beginning to take the piss a bit, have to get a bus out and back which gets pretty annoying, especially if you just miss one and are waiting about for 15 to 20 minutes).

Plus I read somewhere on here that shoulder bags are supposed to only be used for 3hrs 30 maximum, but I'm out with shoulder bags for 5 hours plus a day..

Most posties will know when a bags overweight so not much need to weigh them on daily basis.Don't be carrying overweight bags just to get done quicker its your health and managers will blame you for not weighing bags if you get injured

Don't overdo it the managers are happy for you to carry overweight bags all day i fell into this trap when i first started and ended up with trap nerve in my shoulder.

God, I hated that place.

My advice to new Posties is: Don't trust any management. THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. They are the enemy (pun intended) of everyone on Postman grade. No matter how nice or reasonable they may seem, when push comes to shove, they will sell you out to save their own skin. Look after No1, but try not to s**t on any of the other poor bastards who are also serving time.

Oh, and never 'break' a strike. Never, ever - you just don't do it.

If I am asked to cover an overtime shift at an office that is not my home base, and it is more travel miles to get to and from work, can I claim for additional mileage allowance.
I do claim for a s hift that is within my contractual hours, but unsure if I can claim for an overtime shift.

As a relatively new postie I am now having many problems with the manager of our smallish sorting office in Cheshire. This man is a complete bully, unapproachable and loves nothing more than playing god with the split duties/days off for float posties(saturdays-forget it)/holidays/bank holidays, etc, etc...
I really need some help in tackling this individual because it seems although I am in the Union there is no support for me because both union "persons" in our sorting office are his mates and haven't even been elected through ballot of the staff (is this normal/legal by the way?)
This appalling manager (mostly hated by everyone by the way!) never ever puts his "blue eyed" boys on split duties which is very, very frustrating. Some of his little darlings have never even done a split duty or worked later than 2pm!
It really winds us up because just a handful of us are doing all the split duties(mostly every day!) and yet other staff are finishing their walks and going home early most days, etc...
Believe me, this is the tip of the iceberg and something really needs to be done about this bully boy...
Where do i stand about refusing to do split duties because I feel victimised and unfairly treated compared to other full time staff?
Is there any way that I can report this manager to Royal Mail?
Is there a grievance procedure I can follow?
I really do feel very intimidated by this manager and I have been keeping a written log now for over one year which details everything...
All help greatly appreciated...

By split duties i guess you mean the lapsing/absorbing...

If you and others have the balls and think your rep is treating you and others unfairly,then you could seek a meeting with your area rep,or a branch official.
And if you fancy a big tear up,you could always email Moya at justsayit@royalmail.com especially about your manager.
You could also take a grievance against your manager...

I've been browsing the forum a while now and eventually got round to reading this thread. Seems like I will have picked up some good tips here so just want to say cheers (I start in Gateshead next week) although from this thread and every other one it seems like I should be ready for a verbal fight with the managers.

You're on park & loop there (2 men in a van and trolleys)and latest word is it's failing,your office also walked out in March due to management shenanigans.

May be ok though,don't panic and seek out the rep asap,and join the union.
