Post worker sacked and arrested over lost mail Plymouth

A ROYAL Mail worker has been arrested and dismissed from the firm in connection with a lost bag of mail from Plymouth.

In January, Royal Mail customers began to contact The Herald after precious items sent using its special delivery service did not arrive.

Now, seven months on, Royal Mail has confirmed that a prosecution is "pending".

But victims of the incident are demanding further answers as to where their post – which contained passports and other valuable details – ended up.

A Royal Mail spokesman said the firm's security team arrested the worker and it is bringing the prosecution to Crown Court.

"A Royal Mail employee, from outside the Plymouth area has been dismissed following an investigation into missing items of mail. A prosecution is pending," the spokesman said.

"Royal Mail has a zero-tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust."

But Jane Barton, from Looseleigh, is unhappy at the lack of communication from the firm.

Mrs Barton and her husband John – who run a garage MOT service in Crapstone – lost their passports and, as a result, very nearly a dream holiday.

"I was very upset with the way I was treated," she said.

"When will we find out exactly what happened to our passports? Where are they? Have they been recovered?

"I think we deserve to know what has happened."

Cancer sufferer Fay Kiely, from Ernesettle, lost £150 when she posted cash to her daughter.

The 52-year-old explained that Royal Mail refunded the cash but never offered her any compensation or an explanation as to what happened to the money.

"I was pretty disgusted to just get a cheque in the post but no other compensation," Fay said.

"It's not on because we are supposed to be able to trust these people – and Royal Mail.

"I'm glad that they caught this man and I hope he does time.

"He deserves everything he gets. It's disgusting really that this sort of thing happens in the first place."

The Herald's defence reporter, Tristan Nichols, also had his passport stolen – along with personal details – which were being sent to the Ministry of Defence ahead of his deployment to work with the British Forces Broadcasting Service in Afghanistan.

I'm confused about this, is it a full load of SDs went missing, or someone taking the items he was given to deliver :hmmmm

I'm confused too. Should we speculate?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

We could do a Leighton but looks like his speculation has got him into trouble with the authorities

"Mrs Barton and her husband John – who run a garage MOT service in Crapstone – lost their passports and, as a result, very nearly a dream holiday." - I'm sure that if I lived in Crapstone I would need a dream holiday.

They might have sent their passports off to an embassay for a visa, I've delivered many SD's from them containing passports.
