Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), has much riding on the dispute with Royal Mail.
Four years ago the union narrowly lost a ballot for national strike action against all expectations.
However, since then pay and conditions have improved substantially, as Mr Ward has pursued a campaign to bring postal workers’ pay into line with the national average pay. Now Royal Mail has abruptly pulled the shutters down and a strike looks all but inevitable.
Mr Ward, a South Londoner and former postman in Tooting, will also want a successful result for his own election hopes. Next year he has to stand for reelection to the deputy general secretary’s role in charge of post. It would be his second reelection after winning the job nine years ago.
Last week Mr Ward stood down from the Labour Party’s ruling National Executive Committee, saying that there had never been so many differences between the Government’s policies and what the union wanted.
More differences are likely to flare at the union’s conference as the CWU presses for a change in direction from Labour as the party mounts its leadership and deputy leadership contests.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
