T HERE have been a couple of letters in the Evening Post about correspondence being returned to the sender rather than being delivered to the addressee.
I had a similar problem several years ago when a postcard which I had posted to be entered in to a competition was returned to me. I complained to Royal Mail and was advised that if the addressee's name is printed on the postcard in the landscape position and the sender's name is printed on the reverse of the postcard also in the landscape position, it can occur that the automatic sorting equipment cannot differentiate between the addressee and the sender.
I was advised that the addressee details should be printed on the postcard in the landscape position and then the sender's details printed on the reverse of the postcard in the portrait position. I have never had a problem since adopting that method of writing postcards.

Re: Beating the system
It's commonplace for such competition entries to come back as if the sorting machine randomly uses either the address on the front or the one on the back.
Likewise all those people who reuse envelopes with the lines or orange dots still showing it comes back to the sender's delivery office - I put the thin 'PEEL HERE' bit from the bottom of the "Found oped or damaged ..." strip over the orange dots and so it goes properly on its way.
