I think the Jewish Sabbath starts at sunset on the Friday, if I recall correctly from when I worked at Stamford Hill , if you knocked the door after this , the people would not answer, but many of those people followed a very orthodox interpretation of their religion and Im sure that probably applies to most of the major religions too, some will be less strict in their observance than others. Me, I'm a God -fearing atheist , although I did for some years worship at the table of the Slavic god Radegast by imbibing as many fine Czech lagers as possible.

Yep we have, you can come in on a Friday an hour late and you wont have to make up the time. Also I think theres another version where you have to dissapeer every couple of hours for 10 minutes. The wait till it gets dark before you can eat thing is good as it creates chaos and mostly winds up the shift manager who is a Hindu (oh and also a control freak and sociopath).

Not aware of any Royal Mail official policy document however ACAS have produced a booklet entitled "Religion or belief and the Workplace" qand it says.

4.1 The Regulations do not say that employers must provide time and facilities for religious or belief observance in the workplace. However, employers should consider whether their policies, rules and procedures indirectly discriminate against staff of particular religions or beliefs and if so whether reasonable changes might be made.

4.2 Many religions or beliefs have special festival or spiritual observance days. A worker may request holiday in order to celebrate festivals or attend ceremonies. An employer should sympathetically consider such a request where it is reasonable and practical for the employee to be away from work, and they have sufficient holiday entitlement in hand. While it may be practical for one or a small number to be absent it might be difficult if numerous such requests are made. In these circumstances the employer should discuss the matter with the employees affected, and with any recognised trade union, with the aim of balancing the needs of the business and those of other employees. Employers should carefully consider whether their criteria for deciding who should and who should not be granted leave may indirectly discriminate.

Whilst perusing this thread it reminds me that i never become tired of rereading the case of Donald Holden v. Royal Mail Group PLC.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Hi all! Ain't been on for a while but this will tickle a lot of you. After 2 1/2 years of that no rung ladder in royal mail, another vacancy was advertised in our delivery office as an "in house trainer" so I applied for it like I did with the other two vacancies in the past and failed. This was a bit more promising but , to my surprise (laugh) i was patronisingly told that I had not enough experience (bearing in mind that I learnt 90 percent of the rounds in the d/o), over this person that is lucky to know about 30percent +he's been there about 8years.
After that about 3 weeks I was left a 2 lined note by my Dom that he was no longer needing me to work over my contractual hours(25) . As he didn't have enough hours in the office and needed to cut back. :hmmmm Hold up it gets better!!!
About 5 weeks prior to that the Dom brought his son in as a casual, got me to train him on the round I was flexed up on ,
( unfortunately I developed tendinitis in both my feet from this round) put me on van rounds to give my feet rest for a while, and then cut my hours. I worked out that his son was 1 earning more hours than me and 2 if this company does things upon the old basis of seniority should have I not been offered before him. :so there :speak to the hand
I was also told by my rep that casual staff are only to be used as and when they are needed. BUT THIS GUY HAS PUT TWO CASUAL STAFF ON TO THE ROTA PANEL.WTF.
So anyway I could no longer afford to drive to work and took a loan move to my nearest depot( where I was told that overtime was in abundance) apparently not.Bul\$¥\* again. I have genuinely had enough now and have started seeking for new employment. It turns my stomach to say that I work for a company like this, as there are so many backdoor deals going on , and nothing is done about it!!!
