A POST office clerk has been accused of stealing cash from an 82-year-old who had poor eyesight.

Anthony Edward Tipton denies withdrawing more than Percy Evans had asked for when he took money out of his account, and pocketing the difference.

Tipton 55, of Borth-y-Gest, near Porthmadog, appeared at Dolgellau Magistrates court yesterday to face three charges of theft. He is accused of stealing £378 from Mr Evans, of Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, between September and October last year.

Prosecutor Ian Evans set out the case against Tipton. He said: “The defendant was working as a mobile post office operator. The victim has very poor eyesight. He would get money from the Post Office. The allegations against the defendant is that he would put over and above what Mr Evans wanted.

“If Mr Evans wanted £80 he’d take £200 and pocket the difference. Mr Evans wasn’t able to see this. It was a substantial breach of trust.

Tipton answered “Not guilty” when the three charges were put to him. The case was sent for trial at Caernarfon Magistrates court in November.

The Post Office confirmed Tipton was dismissed 10 months ago after the charges came to light. He had worked as a clerk operating the mobile post office at Minfford, run from a core post office at Criccieth.
