A POSTMAN has written a book in memory of his best friend and it’s selling out on Amazon.

Gavin Whyte, 28, of Emley, wrote Waiting For Wings – A Story of Hope after his friend 22-year-old Daniel Cox died of a brain tumour.

Gavin said: “I was inspired by Daniel and there would be no book if it wasn’t for him.

“I began writing it in 2009 after he died and have written ever since.

“I was 11 and he was eight when we became friends. We were really close, our lives began to parallel one another as we grew up and we seemed to be doing the same things and then he became ill.

Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumour around Christmas 2007 and died in July 2008.

The former Almondbury High School pupil was a regular volunteer and worked with the Kirklees Youth Offending Team.

He was also a director at voluntary organisation Rhyme and Rhythm Productions, which taught creative writing, hip hop and rap to young people

As a rapper, he was known to thousands as MC WiZe and spoke out against negative messages in rap music.

Gavin said: “He worked really hard in the community and was always supporting and helping people.

“I hope that my book will be an extension of his work and will continue to help support other people.

“I hope that it acts as a comfort and support to those that have lost someone.

“Holding on to grief can be unhealthy and I hope that people can think about death in another way after reading the book.”

The fiction book is inspired by Gavin’s life experiences.

It is about 13-year-old Jamie, who finds out his best friend Dan has a brain tumour.

The plot is moved along by Jamie’s younger sister, who sees things in her sleep and the wise old neighbour, Mr Legna. It focuses on life after death.

Although plans are being made to publish the 150-page book in hardback, it is currently only being sold as an e-copy and can be downloaded from Amazon for £1.61.

Gavin said: “Sometimes I would sit at my laptop at home and I would just say, right, what’s next? and I would just start typing and things would come out that I never expected. I was almost channelling something.”

Gavin has been working as a postman in Bradley for the past seven years and regularly volunteers at Kirkwood Hospice.

The book has been hailed a triumph by Amazon customers and has reached number 14 in the Angels reading chart.
