POST will arrive later in the day as Royal Mail introduces new delivery procedures.
The changes will lead to 'chaos' as they are bedded in, according to the Communication Workers Union.
Under the changes being phased in at Congleton Delivery Office, posties will take on longer routes and have new equipment to carry more and bulkier mail.
Royal Mail say 'many customers' will continue to get their mail before lunchtime, but that deliveries will continue for a larger portion of the day than at present.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We need to modernise the way we operate. We are making changes at our Congleton delivery office to maintain our services and keep our prices among the lowest in Europe.
"Fewer letters are now posted and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.
"We also deliver more larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely.
"The new equipment also reduces the risk of injury to our postmen from carrying heavier mail bags."
The phased changes came into effect on Monday, but Royal Mail published details at the end of business hours yesterday.
It is thought the new equipment referred to is trolleys which postmen can push along, rather than the current holdall-style bags.
There is no suggestion that any jobs will be lost under the changes, although the shifts postmen work could alter.
The spokesman added: "Royal Mail will continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during the day. Many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime.
"The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route."
Royal Mail's collections and delivery sector manager, Corey Kitchen, said: The local delivery team and I are committed to providing a high quality of service that is as reliable and friendly as customers have come to expect from Royal Mail in Congleton over many years."
Kevin Hughes, CWU secretary for the Cheshire No. 1 branch, said last night: "Congleton is going through what Crewe went through – a change in the delivery patterns.
"It will be chaos as it goes in and there are problems with it, because it assumes people are working at a set delivery rate.
"Yes, we are delivering less mail, but we're still going to 90 per cent of the doors. Then, there's the amount of doors we knock on to get a signature. It used to be about 10 in a round; I've had it at more than 60."
Mr Hughes said delivery times in Crewe and Congleton were running generally later because post was now sorted at Warrington, not Crewe.
He added: "Some people will find their mail is getting delivered later. For some people it's not a big deal, but it's not great for businesses."
Resident Zoe Jackson, aged 19, of St John's Road, said: "If you're waiting in for something, like a cheque, it will be annoying if it's late.
"But it's good if they can carry more, so they don't have to double back to the delivery office."
Steph Ellerman, aged 24, of Buglawton, said: "It could make a big difference to businesses."

Postal Deliveries will come later
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Because the ethos of RMC is to give information to Postal Workers and Customers, at least on RMC they will get the truth without spin. Part of that is posting News Stories that seem repetitive but gives a customer from"Congleton" in this case an idea why mail appears delayed or late.demon wrote:y the same s**t posts all the time we already no nowt you can do about it
