Royal Mail delays decision on stamping its mark on mail

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has welcomed Royal Mail’s announcement that it is now ‘taking additional time’ to consider its proposal to stamp all bulk mail with the message ‘Delivered by the Royal Mail’.

Before Royal Mail made its announcement today (26 July), the mailing industry was on a two-month notice period until its new initiative was due to come into effect.

The industry has reacted with a mixture of horror and anger at the proposals, with many direct mail service providers and clients complaining about ceding control of the area of the envelope that is reserved for their branding and messaging. Many others have argued that the short notice period would leave them out of pocket from having to change creative work and scrapping stockpiles of printed envelopes.

The DMA has been one of the most vocal critics of Royal Mail’s proposed scheme, pointing out that Royal Mail has failed to consult its customers and other organisations that have a vested interest in bulk mail before announcing its intentions. The DMA has galvanised support for its objections from its member companies and petitioned the postal regulator Postcomm to intervene.

Speaking on behalf of the DMA, Alex Walsh, head of postal and environmental affairs, said:

“We’re delighted that our actions have resulted in extending the period of time Royal Mail says it will take before implementing its plans. It gives us more breathing space to continue the fight to establish the principle that Royal Mail shouldn’t add anything to their customers' mail that isn't strictly required for operational reasons.

“We have no problem with the concept providing it’s only done with the full agreement of their customers. We’re pleased that our actions have had a positive effect and that Royal Mail has responded to industry concerns.”

If you actually feel "horror and anger" at these proposals, what do you do when something more horrific happens?

"When I saw the tiny Royal Mail seal on the corner of envelope, I was horrifed and furious. But gosh, when I was standing in lower Manhattan, watching the twin towers burn and collapse, the hundreds of people being killed by terrorists, I.... uh.... was really, really horrified and furious."

of course TNT and UK mail want to preserve the illusion that they are proper players in delivery.
there are huge vested interests in the whole direct advertising sector.

eghttp://www.lowcostmailing.co.uk/offers
unbelievably you can get your advertising specially printed and delivered! for a cost only a few pence more than rm will charge you for delivering it!
thanks to the regulator.
as you can see dsa underpins not just rival deliverers but a whole printing industry as well!

begs the question why rm brains couldn't organize something like this.
we are doing the difficult bit already add a few laser printers and some design graduates. :hmmmm
oh i forgot the regulator has priced us out of it.

Nothing to do with that, but everything to do with the fact that a government agency allegedly couldn't be seen to be in direct competition with private printing and mailing houses (as they were termed back in the early nineties when this sort of idea first emerged)

point taken
my main issue is that the Direct Marketing Association represents companies like the one in the added link.
much more so than tnt or uk post.

dsa was supposed to encourage rival companies into the delivery sector it has
failed in that respect.but has been successful in enabling you to have 10,000 leaflets designed printed and delivered for 36p an item
( rm is a delivery option but it is more expensive as the regulator says we cant undercut our rivals).
if rm back down after all he hype then il consider it another case of money talking.
