ROYAL MAIL has apologised for delivering inconvenience after a fortnight of late postal deliveries.
Richard James, manager of Xpress News in Sandy Hill, St Austell, was bewildered and worried when his post started arriving later and later.
He said a member of his staff was told by a postal worker covering the round that Royal Mail planned to make deliveries later because that's what the public wanted.
Mr James, 23 – who for the past two weeks has put up with his post being delivered between 4pm and 5pm – contacted the Cornish Guardian concerned that such a decision would make running a business even harder given the current economic climate.
Mr James said: "Many of our customers pay for their papers by cheque and because these were arriving so late in the day we were unable to pay them in to the bank on the same day."
These are payments, often collectively totalling several hundred pounds, which the family-run business relies on.
"It's had a knock-on effect on the business. It's made it a real struggle the past couple of weeks."
A Royal Mail spokesman apologised for the inconvenience caused.
He said there were no plans to make later deliveries and that Royal Mail is committed to ensuring all post is delivered by 3pm in towns.
Absence
"Unfortunately, due to unforeseen absence, the delivering in that area is being covered by a postman and woman from St Austell, in addition to their own deliveries, which has meant on occasion deliveries have been later than we and our customers expect," said the spokesman.
On Friday – two days after Mr James contacted the Cornish Guardian – his post was delivered by 10am.
He said: "We're reassured that it [Royal Mail] has given the assurance things will be back to normal."

To be fair that would be the first time RM ever listened to what the public wanted.

Well I would say that postal worker has got it right in one. We warned you what would happen Mr and Mrs General Public and that warning is now coming to pass
