Did you get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning? This started about dog attacks but you started shouting about us not taking our responsibilities properly, as I said before, managers job to manage and my job to put letters through the letterbox.

I got bitten 2-3 weeks ago by a really old looking dog. The property has a box and so I had never gone past it until I had a special on this particular day and as I walked towards this big house the old dog stood there looking at me, not looking threatening at all. As I walked past him he bit me on the hand. The owner apologised and to be honest it wasn't a particularly viscious bite although it did draw blood. The owner made no offer to clean it or anything. When I had a Hazard awareness session with my DOM a few days later he said to not enter beyond the mailbox if I ever had a special again and on Saturday when I had another one I followed his advice and put a 739 card into the box. No-one even knew of this dogs existence as I think the owners were relatively new.

No your job involves passing on the information from the front line for your Managers to manage. In fact your job is to perform any task, within reason, for which you've had adequate training. Since highlighting low letterboxes, slippery driveways, loose paving, sticking gates, blocked access and the whereabouts of dogs does not require specific training, you could be conduct coded for failing to undertake that request.

Hi. I have worked with dogs most of my adult life having been a dog handler in the Army, a Police Officer and now a Dog Warden for the last 5 years. In my current role I routinely carry out investigations into dog attacks on postal staff. I have done research into this subject and am amazed that around 5000 postal staff are seriously attacked by dogs each year.

My view is that the majority of those attacks could have been prevented as it was known the dogs had previously been aggressive to staff.
Whilst I can appreciate the Royal Mail is a large organisation, they do appear to lack the professional knowledge in properly dealing with attacks on their staff. I am in the process of starting up my consultancy service to specifically give advice to organisations such as the Royal Mail and would relish the opportunity to give talks to staff on how to stay safe around dogs.

I have just come across the site and would like any views or advice on the best way to proceed with my venture.

Afraid OTS that you are being rather poetic with your research statement that around 5000 postal staff are seriously attacked by dogs each year.

It would be more correct to say that around 5000 to 6000 Postal Workers and 400 Telecom Workers are attacked by Dogs every year in the UK whilst delivering the Mail. 70% of which occur on private land or premises. Many members require hospital treatment and many receive serious injuries. Two Postmen were nearly killed in savage attacks in Sheffield 2007 and Cambridge 2008. Many other workers visiting homes and commercial premises are injured by dogs. Children and Adults are being killed and injured by ferocious dogs with irresponsible owners.

I would however like to ask in which part of the UK you are currently a dog warden in? As in Scotland we have redress through the Control of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2010.
