Re: DOG ATTACKS
Well after being bitten this week i'll put my 2pence in. Pulls up at a house i've not been to before ( i deliver track/over sized in an SPDO area not on my delivery ) Walks up the drive , no signs of dog or any warning signs. Knocks on door and hears a dog barking so i back away from the door. Owner opens the door and a jack russel type dog belts out the living room and lauches itself off the door step towards and area i really didn't want biting !!!!! I twisted round f**king my left knee up and the dog then bit my right leg. The owner then grabs dog and packet and shuts the door in my face ! 2 1/2 hours down the hospital , 4 X rays on knee , 2 lots of antibiotics for dog bite and Tramadol for knee pain , back to soft tissue unit on Monday for a CT on knee . Filled in ERICA and manager popped out to see them. Filling out a CWU claim form 1st thing Monday morning. No dog warning card in fitting after checking at SPDO as this dog has not bitten anyone before , no way of getting out the way of the mutt and you couldn't knock at a door then leg it behind the wall when ever you hear a dog bark. Its not the postie that needs training or RM its the dog owners

Re: DOG ATTACKS
I have dogs so I know how to recognise their moods/current disposition/attitude but I have been bitten/menaced lots - people open the door to get a parcel and the dog runs out and sinks it's teeth into your leg
the dog makes a full scale sprint for 100's of metres away and I know I can't out run it so............'put the bag in front of me' is the official line but that doesn't stop an 8 stone alsation...........ever.
of course today I had a Staffy come running up to me but I knew it wasn't being aggressive because of it's demeanour, it did follow me around my delivery for the next 15 minutes and only went home when I got in the van.
We don't need trained, the public need trained.

Re: DOG ATTACKS
You can't put your bag in front of you on a P & L delivery as your bag is now attached to the trolley at the end of the driveway. I guess you could bash it over the head with the bundle of mail you are carrying
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Re: DOG ATTACKS
OTS, I get the impression that your particular service , the one you are trying to sell to us, is not what we want. I know full well how to tell at a glance what type of animal I'm facing and how they react to my particular actions. I'm aware that your experience of victims tells you different but that doesn't really matter.
I still think that your services are better employed teaching the owners, and here's why:
We are told to not enter where we see a dog, endorse the mail accordingly, return it to the office, inform a Manager and ensure that the WRAP system and walk log is updated accordingly. At that point the customer is informed that they will not receive mail if their dog is out and it's their problem to control.
If we do not see a dog until after we have entered the property then that is usually down to our own negligence or that of the dog owner.
As a reminder of all known dogs on our duties, we carry a hazard card or mark the first mail item as an alert to its existence. We should make a noise, rattle the gate, whistle etc. to ensure that 'Tyson' isn't out of sight before entering. If after that we get our fingers bitten by not using the dog peg with which we were provided, then it's primarily our fault because we failed to exercise the control we had over that situation. If the dog is released somehow by the owners then it is their fault, because they have been pre-warned by letter when added to the WRAP system and have failed to exercise proper control.
That really only leaves us with unexpected situations and unknown dogs. Thankfully these are few and far between and as a result not something we should be wasting resources training for.
As you can see from the above the most important control we have over dog attacks is in our own hands and anything which occurs outside of that is generally where the training is needed, i.e. the owners.

Re: DOG ATTACKS
Same here I have been trying to get management to highlight ALL KNOWN dogs, but apparently management guidance says only those that have caused problems should be highlighted - seems a bit backwards to me.DGP1 wrote:Do weAs a reminder of all known dogs on our duties, we carry a hazard card or mark the first mail item as an alert to its existence. POPY COCK
AGAIN I ASK THE QUESTION
]
WHY ARE REPS NOT BEING INFORMED ON CORRECT PROCEEDURE AND MANAGERS NOT ENFORCEING A ROYAL MAIL POLICY
ITS CALED W.R.A.P
WALK RISK ASSESSMANT PROGRAM
IT IS DESIGNED TO LIST ALL WALK HAZARDS SO ANYBODY ON A DIFFERENT WALK CAN LOOK AT THE WALK LOG AND IDENTIFY HAZARDS
HAS ANYBODY OUT THERE SEEN HAZARD CARDS AND HAZARD CARD HOLDERS

Re: DOG ATTACKS
Does anybody seriously think that someone who won't take their break will take the time to look at a walk log?
Do you honestly think that this person will take the time to fill out Hazard Cards or keep their walk log up to date?
Do you think that someone trying to finish early will properly asses the situation before entering the property?
Do you think that someone pressured constantly by management to do all of the above just to finish on time gives a flying f**k about WRAP?
The whole culture of the business has to be changed before any of this has any meaning to anyone outside the minority who already work by the rules and therefore don't really need the sermon.
If you want H&S to work you start at the top of the company and work your way down,it doesn't work the other way around.

WRAP IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT
IF SOMEONE HAS BEEN BITTEN BY A DOG AND THEY HAVE NOT LOOKED AT THE WALK LOG THEN ROYAL MAIL WILL GO DOWN THE SSP ROUTE
IT CAN BE CLASSED UNDER P.P.E.
REPS NEED TO BE MADE AWARE OF THINGS LIKE THIS
WHAT THE HELL ARE THE AREA H&S REPS DOING
YOUR ATTITUDE LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED
TO MAKE CHANGE PEOPLE HAVE TO START SOMEWARE
IF THATS BEING A PAIN IN THE ASS TO MANAGERS ON H&S
SO BE IT

I'm just not impressed by words and shiny things like a lot of H&S reps seem to be.
If you fail to see the big picture, start in the wrong place and concentrate your resources at the wrong target your enemy will sneak up behind you and bite you on the arse...
In much the same way as a big hairy German Shepherd will really...

THATS THE PROBLEM
#
I DO SEE THE BIG PICTURE
EVERY DAY
THE PHOTOS ARE NOT VERY NICE, AND IME NOT JUST TALKING ON MINOR BITES
IF I CAN STOP JUST ONE MORE DOG BITE THROUGH ENFORCEING A POLICY IN A LOCAL OFFICE THEN I SHALL DO JUST THAT
BEFORE YOU ASK I AM NOT A H&S REP BUT I AM MISSING MY LEFT INDEX FINGER THROUGH A DOG BITE FOR WHICH I DO NOT FIND CERTAIN COMMENTS FUNNY AT ALL

Re: DOG ATTACKS
Don't get all pompous on me Keith,i've been there, seen it and done it.
If you want to go down the "Jaws" route i have a chunk of flesh missing from my right thigh(German Shepherd) and some lovely teeth marks on my left arm(rottweiller).
The point is i've been in this job a long time and seen all of the initiatives come and go and they have all failed to make a damm bit of difference to the overall dog attack figures because the culture of getting the job done as quickly as possible has never been addressed.
Maybe if you concentrated your efforts on changing that particular mindset in your office you could prevent more than one dog bite.
...and Keith...turn the CAPS LOCK off please.

Re: DOG ATTACKS
WRAP
is that the thing we have to fill out because RM wont actually carry out risk assessments
they want us to do them so that when something goes wrong WE'RE to blame
When I'm paid and trained to do risk assessments then I'll do them but until then I'll leave it to those who have been trained.
