Its like this yeah! you take your Blackberry out to text in a special and a guy snatches it off you, will Royal Mail compensate you for it. I Think not, same if you took it out and dropped it and it broke. Tell them straight at the WTL you are not prepared to use you phone, two choices don’t give me specials or give me a Royal Mail phone..

Thats what I do - hand the card in. BUT I hand it in next time I'm at the office, which could be the next day, or the day after that if its my day off.taurus88 wrote:I hand my card in when I get back and that's all I ever do - I'm sure somebody in the locker can read. A lot of guys in our office ring in so they don't have to come back. ...
I've been told to ring in, but I just give a confused look. Not hard as I'm utterly confused by the need to let them know by a certain time.

Re: Phoning in for specials
The problem with Specials is if they are not confirmed as delivered by 1.30 (a PHG could confirm the time) they show up on the system as failures.
Unless the PHG receives confirmation before this time that the Special has or has not been delivered, they have to confirm it as delivered to avoid it showing up as a failure.
Confirming something as delivered when you have no idea if that is true is completely stupid in the 21st Century, and very annoying to a customer who through Track and Trace can find out where their item is. Computer says it has been delivered, but they don't have it.
The PDA confirms the delivery or not at the time it is attempted.
I agree with Clash, the Specials should all go with the people properly equipped to deal with them. Anyone with a PDA.
If you are pre revision and the walking posties do not have a PDA they should no longer be carrying Specials.

What about the cost of the phone.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:While I agree that we should be provided with a method of contacting the depot by Royal Mail, just like the pens that are isssued for signatures and 739s, I would have thought that the time taken to text the callers office more than covers the 10p maximum cost of sending the text outside your meal relief allowance? As in we are paid over 14p per minute before tax and it takes at least a minute to compose the text when there are 739ed specials, when all clear just take a minute of worktime to cover the cost.
If RM want me to make telephone calls they need to provide me with a phone, part of the employment act states you should incur no costs to enable you to complete your job... end of.
Give me a PDA or the specials fail .... simple.

* £2000 is technically correct but what you sent has to be worth £2000 to get £2000Lateagainpostie wrote:A PDA is about £400, a failed special is about £2k*, eventually my Dom will get the message it's cheaper to provide shared vans with two PDA's ....simplesIndy wrote:<FX:Shakes head in disappointment>Lateagainpostie wrote:Give me a PDA or the specials fail .... simple.

Re: Phoning in for specials
i totally agree with everyone that has already been said...
i know for a fact that at neither of the DOs i worked at offered a special number to call or text...
we were just given the direct landline number for the "cage"... obviously that still raises the issue of the cost that the postie incurs to confirm/provide a service for Royal Mail... and even if you are stupid enough to call the office from your own phone (which im ashamed to admit that i did* - although only after a grilling from the PHG and DOM) how often does the PHG or someone else answer the fecking phone... always too busy off having a bloody coffee and fag break
hmm.. i wonder if Greggs the bakers staff provide Greggs with flour to bake with
the other point that i have not seen above.. apart from the cost of the call/text, no answer, risk of phone being stolen, damage if phone dropped...
is what about the water ingress damage to your phone when your trying to call or text the office when its absolutly chucking it down wi rain... again no one is going to recompense you ...
I dont know how it was at other offices... but both offices i worked at both the DOM and the PHG had a note of your mobile number - normally to ask you to come in early the next day, or do some o/t cos joe bloggs has twisted his ancle and aint finished his round .
Hell even the MC.. the bird/bloke in the office has a note of your numbers incase of emergency or whatever
*aint retrospect a wonderfull thing
