Thats a fair point George and i understand what you mean

My point is that on a busy saturday iam struggling to finish before the office closes at 12.40pm. The firms have a much easier load on a sat but if i get 5 or 6 mech trays then iam going to almost every house and my delivery will take 4 hours which is the same it does in the week. However we are paid 2 hours less so where are you supposed to find the time ?

Our firms finish about 11.30 - 12 most days in the week so they are already making over 1hr 30 mins a day. On a sat iam watching the clock as i really want to get back before the office closes as i have a thing about wanting to hand in my docket left reg's to the locker instead of putting them in the overnight safe box.

This is why it annoys me when we are held on the sorting and the firms are almost standing behind you waiting for you to place a letter in their box so they can tie/bundle up :evil/mad

Normally it dont bother me but it does on a sat when iam feeling under pressure
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Why? What does it matter when you take it? As long as it's being taken I don't see the problem.
It's not being taken though.
Sitting in the house 40mins early isn't taking your break....it's finishing early...in RM's eyes at least.

Fish is right which is why i stop after 3hrs delivery (in the week ) and take a 40 min break before the last hour, its also better for your health long term.

Trouble is that if you have to do absorbtion a Dom will not always see that you have not taken a break and have run out of time whilst others who have stopped are still working. Its always better to take your break within the duty.

What do you make of local agreements where the break is 'built in' to the end of the duty?

Not a lot because it encourages people to believe they can finish early and if they go over for 5/10/15 minutes they would rarely book overtime. I think at least 20 minutes should be taken prior to leaving the office.

We had a similar situation at our office until a few years ago,
now the firms deliveries have to absorb half another walk on a saturday or do a "sweep" on any mail left in the office, missorts etc.

I think for anyone on more than a 6hr day, such local agreements are illegal.

It would only be illegal if RM forced you to do it. If you do it by choice then that is legal. The problem with a local agreement would be that not all staff may agree with it and so are in effect being forced to take their break at the end of duty against their will, which is illegal.

At our office its simply up to yourself when you wish to take a break, as long as you finish the IPS. As it stands only 1 postie takes a full break before he goes out and then just me who stops after around 3 hours delivery with an hour still to go. The rest grab a bite to eat at the frame whilst they prep and then take the time at the end of the duty. :arrrghhh

I used to always stop for 30 mins in the van and then have the P**S taken out of me for that, lazy etc. Others now moan because i leave the sorting floor and go upstairs to the once canteen around 12 noon (its my meal relief for christ sake), however these others have in fact already finished their duties and are sitting around awaiting a van to use on their overtime :arrrghhh

A postie can be his own worse enemy at times, who needs Doms :cuppa
