I'm specifically talking about the rail employees involved with work on or around the lines, (not those serving in the buffet car), and I'm sure you knew that!

Re: Do You Have To Wear A Hi-Vis Vest On Delivery?
ok fair enough... its job protection to wear your hi-vis vest, rather than not wear it and risk getting taken up on conduct.
i would love to know why there isnt a nationwide agreement in place between CWU and RM re. hi vis...
the other thing that personally i think annoys some people about the hi-vis thing is that it seems to be expected that certain RM delivery staff, Drivers, or MC staff working in areas with machinery ie. forklifts etc HAVE to wear it... but its not required for anyone else.. for example the DOM when he/she is crossing the carpark or yard in the morning, or when coming back after having his/her fag...

Because they are working around heavy machinery and are working in a dangerous enviroment, there is a world of differance between working on the railway lines and walking on the pavement.Himaggen wrote:I'm specifically talking about the rail employees involved with work on or around the lines, (not those serving in the buffet car), and I'm sure you knew that!

…like I said they have less traffic which runs only in straight lines, they are noisier and easier to see for the line crosser when they look left and right, there are less distractions around a railway line and they are generally quicker to cross, even with their low lying hazards.DB1100 wrote:Because they are working around heavy machinery and are working in a dangerous enviroment, there is a world of differance between working on the railway lines and walking on the pavement.
cars are heavy machinery too and the figures suggest that roads are inherently more dangerous than railways.
You know full well that the fluorescent jacket is not to make it easier for the worker to cross, it is simply an early alert system for others in their surroundings.

Re: Do You Have To Wear A Hi-Vis Vest On Delivery?
Here we go again, railway workers are constantly at risk because they are working in a dangerous enviroment as I have explained, walking along the pavement is not dangerous, thousands of people manage it every day, crossing the road is not dangerous if done correctly just follow the method I posted a while ago,pay attention to what I write, before you work on the railways there are all sorts of tests to be done and you have to pass them before you are allowed to work on them,we only cross roads we don't dig them up or operate heavy machinery we only cross them so your comparison is irrelevant,I don't dispute roads are dangerous but the pavements aren't,cross them either at a proper crossing or use the method I pointed out and you will be safe. You should apply your concerns to the fact that there will be a very real chance that 10 or 20 years in the future there will be a very large increase in skin cancer rates among postmen and women due to the fact that we are being exposed to far more sunshine than ever before.Himaggen wrote:…like I said they have less traffic which runs only in straight lines, they are noisier and easier to see for the line crosser when they look left and right, there are less distractions around a railway line and they are generally quicker to cross, even with their low lying hazards.DB1100 wrote:Because they are working around heavy machinery and are working in a dangerous enviroment, there is a world of differance between working on the railway lines and walking on the pavement.

You still fail to see the point, you are only in control your own part of the road crossing task, unfortunately the other road users are not under your control. The only influence we currently have in order to help give them sufficient time to note our whereabouts is by being 'highly visible', hence the PPE.

Come on,how many times do I have to say this,YOU DO NOT STEP OUT INTO THE ROAD IF ITS NOT CLEAR (SAFE TO DO SO),so in laymans terms,if there are any other road users present'i.e cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, horses, cyclists do not step out that way you are in control, its not rocket science is it.On duty I cross 5 roads all in a housing estate,so thats 25 a week 100+ a month and over 1200 a year and I have been with RM a long time,me and my family have done the road crossing task as you call it thousands and thousands of times and unless they are keeping it quite none of us have been run over and we don't wear hi vis vests either nor hardhats (shock horror)Himaggen wrote:You still fail to see the point, you are only in control your own part of the road crossing task, unfortunately the other road users are not under your control. You are right. When I was knocked off my bike the first thing asked was any reflective clothing worn. As much as I hate the things( not the it's too hot nonsense)most people who work on the highways wear them.Himaggen wrote:You still fail to see the point, you are only in control your own part of the road crossing task, unfortunately the other road users are not under your control. Whats that got to do with walking on the pavement?,I've no problem with wearing them whilst riding a bike, its a good idea but my argument is about wearing them whilst walking on the pavement.sidewinder wrote:You are right. Re: Do You Have To Wear A Hi-Vis Vest On Delivery?
When a driver is travelling towards you, they input what they can see some variable distance in front of them, and make their decisions based upon the data they have taken on board. There is a vast array of data and obviously a shortage of time in which to parse and utilise it. It is proven that we can influence their utilisation by adding greater weight to some of the data, specifically our whereabouts. A Hi-Viz stands out in the surroundings and has an direct impact on the way the motorist behaves.
We are talking about accidents, not 'deliberates', I don't expect that anyone deliberately steps out in front of an oncoming vehicle. I wear a seat belt, not because I intend to hit a wall, tree or another vehicle, I look where I'm going, the same as you do when crossing. The seat belt protects me against something unforeseen as does the Hi-Viz garment.
BTW, it's not just the crossing of your five roads either it's each and every driveway off it too.

This is just going to carry on and on,your use of jargon and so called proven facts hasn't convinced me of the need to wear a hi vis vest whilst walking down the pavement, theres is nothing dangerous in crossing the road as long as you take care. The good and sensible work of Health and Safety is ridiculed by enforcing daft rules like this,as it stands sanity prevails in the uniform regs and as I see it I can still walk on my round without wearing a hi-vis so until common sense goes out the window that is what I will do,take care Himaggen.

I don't need to take care…
I have a Hi-Viz so that others have to.

Well it's 'already out of the window' at our office. Any postman on delivery, foot, bike or driver, caught without his hi-vis is taken down the conduct route. Funnily enough, you two have had a longer disagreement than anybody in our office.DB1100 wrote: .......as it stands sanity prevails in the uniform regs and as I see it I can still walk on my round without wearing a hi-vis so until common sense goes out the window that is what I will do, ......
On advice from our H&S rep we just accepted it ......

maybe we should just take the common sense approach and not encourage the internet trollDB1100 wrote:This is just going to carry on and on,your use of jargon and so called proven facts hasn't convinced me of the need to wear a hi vis vest whilst walking down the pavement, theres is nothing dangerous in crossing the road as long as you take care. The good and sensible work of Health and Safety is ridiculed by enforcing daft rules like this,as it stands sanity prevails in the uniform regs and as I see it I can still walk on my round without wearing a hi-vis so until common sense goes out the window that is what I will do,take care Himaggen.

Re: Do You Have To Wear A Hi-Vis Vest On Delivery?
Because the pavement is part of thehighway. I can't think of any highway worker not wearing them. Roadsweepers, dustmen, roadworkers, milkmen etc. All work on the pavement or road. It's covering you're back if you claim. I suppose if you have to wear them it's easier to say it's on than not having to wear them. Anyway as a hgv driver now and yes I have to wear the things out of the cab, being high up you can see people far more clearly in them than not. The times idiots start to cross the road not looking becausethey are on the phone or got a iPod stuck in their lug holed if they are wearing them and not dark coloured clothing at least I have the chance to stop.DB1100 wrote:Whats that got to do with walking on the pavement?,I've no problem with wearing them whilst riding a bike, its a good idea but my argument is about wearing them whilst walking on the pavement.sidewinder wrote:You are right.
