Lol. Trouble is, these guys think they run the office, and are the ultimate "be all and end all" of the Postal Service.easter bunny wrote:themoog wrote:Cheers guys.
@ Easter Bunny...you're on the same page as me mate! I totally agree with everything you have said on here as it happens in my office all the time. One of our chaps is a self styled "super sorter" who regularly gets his round prepped and ready before the others...and he's so proud of that fact. Yet he'll leave stuff on a Saturday because, and I quote verbatim, "I haven't had an early finish this week yet!" Another one has just reduced his hours down to 30 yet still gets his missus (also a postwoman) to help him! The biggest round in our office is also the only part time round and the woman who delivers it struggles to complete everyday...yet doesn't book any overtime if she goes over her time! People still take their d2d's home to prep over the weekend...and there's even one chap who uses his car for part of his delivery! Seniority is used as an excuse for certain people to cherrypick the best collections without having the responsibility of locking up the office...and I'll end up being the parriah for doing the job correctly.
Madness imo...but they just can't see what they're doing.
Imagine, being in the Trenches with these guys when the whistle went and your going over the top to meet the enemy...
Thank God for IHR....

Re: Doing the job correctly.
I do the job correctly.
On time. Last letter
1.15,1.30.
Return to office VIA van.
1st letter 10.
Part of break b4 I go out.
Often cut off
Get most grieve from my driver, impacts on his overtime ghosting.
Saturdays fun watching the runarounds rush hysterically around the office, to gain time.
Have no problem of WORKING my proper hours
My prep often compared to muppets who come in early

My theory is that if we (the guys in my office) all did the job correctly, then we'd all be bringing mail back and the manager would have to look at the rounds and either reduce their size or bring another person or two into the office, which would make it easier for everyone.

Re: Doing the job correctly.
Moaning about it is pointless.
Bitching about it is pointless.
Expecting members to suddenly have an epiphany and "wise up" is pointless.
The only way to improve the situation is through educating the membership and pressuring Royal Mail senior management.
It is a difficult job to educate people when they don't want to listen but it has to be done
The union ran a "Doing the job properly" campaign with mixed success...it's time to re-activate that campaign and move it on to a new level,
I believe that the delivery revisions can give us a platform to move forward with this but everybody has to play a part....and sitting back bitching about it isn't playing a part.
The second part of it...i'm afraid is down to HQ.
They must put pressure on senior management to actively remove the bad practice from the delivery offices, not just talk about it then turn a blind eye when there are savings to be made.
They keep telling us they want us to work all our paid hours....make them prove it.

The ' Doing the Job Properly' exercise was in theory a good idea but had limited success. In my office at the time, Staff picked and choose what part of the exercise to agree with and to hell with the rest. It soon lost it's sparkle due to Management pressure, perhaps, or the choice to work till 2pm or 12.30 pm if we went back to our old ways.
I'm afraid you cannot blame HQ for Staff's selfishness, This has gone on for decades but the important fact in all this is you didn't have yearly revisions then.

What i'm saying is they have a responsibility to play their part in resolving the situation.
There are two reasons for cutting corners...the carrot and the stick.
Management are responsible for the use of both.
If you put people under pressure...they will cut corners.
If you offer members the chance to finish early....they will cut corners.
It's human nature and trying to change human nature is just pissing against the wind...and so is moaning about it.
We can,as i said educate members on the need for change but at the end of the day management hold the key and HQ are the only people who have a chance to force any change on how they use it.

Re: Doing the job correctly.
So to summarise then...if I do the following :-
Get to work bang on time
Sort at the correct speed
Inform my Manager at a reasonable time that I won't be able to complete my delivery
Not stream the mail if he says to 'thin it out'
Take my meal relief
Carry out the required checks on the van daily/weekly
Work from the back of the van
Always turn off and lock the van when I'm away from it
Don't run when on delivery
Return to the office with enough time to unload and check/clean the van
Leave work bang on time
...then I'll be doing the job correctly yes?

You can argue that till the cows come home but you won't get away with it.Not stream the mail if he says to 'thin it out'
If it does happen your rep needs to flag it to area who needs to flag it to HQ and your area management.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Not if management have been told not to do it by senior management...which they have.
If it was me i would dig my heels in,have it out with them and get suspended...
Would i advise anyone else to?....no.

Your totally right and I agree with you 100% about doing your job properly. It's just a pity more posties don't think along the same lines. We are making our own terms and conditions worse and getting the managers bigger bonuses. It's time the good will stopped cause all the managers want to do is make us work harder and longer for less. I urge everyone to DO THEIR JOB PROPERLY. Otherwise it bye bye time
To all the so called younger members of staff wise up and slow down.

Re: Doing the job correctly.
I believe 10 minutes a day are built into duties for vehicle checks. Included in that is cleaning the van both inside and outside if and when required. Filling up with deisel (no not petrol) isn't part of the van check times.
Perhaps fishtank or someone can verify these points..

Re: Doing the job correctly.
Spot on. Our Manager relies on goodwill at xmas, yet returns precisely no goodwill during the summer. It's about time that the Managers realised it works both ways...or failing that, not at all. Either way, he's had it good for far too long now.pink panther wrote:Your totally right and I agree with you 100% about doing your job properly.
