Postie in van heroics gets back to her job

The postwoman who was suspended by Royal Mail after a thief tried to steal her van will keep her job – not as a delivery driver, but in a sorting office role instead.

Julie Roberts clung to the bonnet of her work van for nearly a mile as it was driven off by an opportunist thief in Trysull in South Staffordshire, only to be suspended for leaving her keys in the ignition.

Royal Mail has decided to keep 51-year-old Miss Roberts on but has told her she will be relocated to a sorting office in Wolverhampton.

She is appealing against that decision.

Miss Roberts’ friend, Phillipa Day, who lives with her on Bull Lane, in Wombourne, said today: “Ultimately, Julie wants to be back on her regular round.

“That would be the ideal scenario. It is good that she has kept her employment but she doesn’t want to be stuck in a sorting office.”

Royal Mail spokesman Richard Hall said he could not comment on individual cases. Staffordshire Police have arrested and bailed a man from Dudley on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and theft.

In what way? In my office the van driver not only leaves the keys in the ignition but leaves the engine running too whilst he's delivering to peoples doors. Now he IS lucky. Lucky he's not been caught that is; YET! I wonder what would happen to him if he was caught.

Oh, our driver has mail, packets, d2d AND specials in the front. No-one has tried to nick it yet though. so he's EXTREMELY lucky.

I think she may be pushing it by appealing, there a risk it could backfire, she should consider herself VERY fortunate to keep her job at all, take the flak and if she gets back on driving in future, take the keys with her every time she steps out.

Not aware of the full facts but it looks like her only punishment was to be removed from driving.
I would call that a result given the fact that most of what happened is open to interpretation.

I am glad she got her job back. Right or wrong a mistake was made and it was very heroic of her to hang on to the van. The person who nicked it will get a slap on the wrist. They Will continue to receive their low life government benefits which will then be paid for by us and ironically the poor lady who is now stuck in a sorting office.

She'll soon be back out driving & delivering, the DOM will be short staffed and tell her to go out on delivery. I always see those private cars full of parcels engine running and the driver no where to be seen. I wonder how many of them get nicked

She HAS lost her job (the job that she was doing). What she hasn't lost, though, is her employment within RM. To me, it's a kick in the teeth. I mean, if she deserves not to lose her employment within RM, then why should she be removed to serve some lesser punishment elsewhere?

It's simple, RM are c***s, and don't give a monkey's about anyone, especially when they themselves might be percieved as also the guilty party. I mean, we're all human, and if anything it's those-like imperfections that's makes us all human. If RM were really about serving the community, including its workforce then they would know that we (the workforce) wouldn't want to jeopardise our future relationships with RM. But, like I said, RM don't give a monkey's. Fugg me, but if I was sacked for all the mistakes I've made then no fugger would be left working for RM.

Fugg you RM. Fugg you big time!

I am pleased she has not been sacked, but does she relise how lucky she is, a rural driver in my office had is van stolen in very similar circumstances and he lost his job. If being transfered to the mail center is her only punishment, I would take that. Any way we all know that she will end up back at her office eventually as rural deliver drivers are a specilist job that reqires local knowledge and experiance, its hard to train some one up. So sit tight

Does this not set a precedant? This case? How come others are sacked and not her?
