CLWYD West MP David Jones has urged the public to fight the closure threat to Royal Mail’s sorting office in Colwyn Bay.
Mr Jones said he had been given assurances from the Royal Mail Group that jobs will be protected and there will be no impact for customers should the office be merged with Llandudno.
But Mr Jones is urging people to write to Royal Mail to make their concerns known.
He said: “The delivery office is an important facility in Colwyn Bay and is heavily used by the public. It also employs a significant number of staff and I am concerned that their employment should be protected."
Mr Jones said he had been assured that there will be no compulsory redundancies and that staff would be compensated for additional travel to work costs if the merger goes through.
“Royal Mail provides a vital service to the people of Colwyn Bay and whilst I understand that they may need to rationalise their operation, it must not be at the expense of their staff or customers.”
Royal Mail is carrying out a feasibility study into a proposed merger of the two offices. This is in its initial planning stage and no decision will be made until the autumn at the earliest.
Despite claims the service for customers would not be effected, Assembly Member Darren Millar claimed the closure would be a “heavy blow for the town”.
He said: “The Colwyn Bay sorting office is one of the largest and most prominent buildings in the town and we must make sure it stays open. For the building to be redundant would be a huge setback to all the regeneration efforts that are underway in Colwyn Bay.
“The Royal Mail’s announcement could not have come at a worse time for the town and I have already urged them to reconsider their plans.”

Colwyn Bay:Fight sorting office plan
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
