Allocation of jobs at the new MC will be based not on length of service, but on how long an individual has been claiming a particular shift allowance (or TPM if relevant.)

That's MTSF2(2003) for you.
Due to pay protection and the fact that RM won't pay twice i.e. the displaced person on the higher allowance and the new person who signs for the job,it should be the length of time you have been in reciept of the allowance.

That is RM's interpretation. Actually MTSF2 was intended specifically for DO revisions resulting in the loss of most of the night duties.
It was never intended for MC closures, and AFAIK it has not been used for MC closures before.
They tried to use it in their London MC proposals, and was one of the reasons for the overwhelming vote for IA.
Following the vote, and the subsequent negotiations they have agreed that there will be a full resign at Mount Pleasant, using seniority as before.

One rule for Mt P. and another for Medway then? Members got a glossy colour booklet in the post last week and it's all there in black and white. AFAIK there's no word of South & East Thames Amal calling for IA to redress the issue.

London staff were sent glossy brochures too, but we don't take too much notice of RM propaganda bs.

Hi chimps can i ask where you are based, I'm at Canterbury and we've been told the same info. Clear choice setting up this week with a list of seniority etc to be displayed. Be good to get a line into what is being said/happening at one of the other mail centres. Thanks

Baldrick well said, the union reps get a lot of stick,especially behind their backs, but the london reps did a bloody good job making sure the transfers will be done in seniority.Seniority in most cases has always beent the main criteria,and most people know this from the first day,they walk in the job.

I work in London so we are going thru the same thing, at the start they told us it was by shift allowance and when it last changed which was a real mess because even if you had a training coarse and you lost allowance for that period that's when your seniority started.

We found so many holes in this possess that in the end they changed it to the shift your on and then seniority in RM at that office.
Not perfect but much better than it was at the start.

I've been told that the reason is because a woman took RM to court (Midlands area?) a few years ago and won her case.

With that in mind, I'm left wondering why London has been allowed to revert back to seniority based on length of service.

Most laws by the way are not written in stone and "Age discimination" aspects of law is a perfect example.

There are some situations that are exempt from age discrimination in the workplace legislation. For example:

•Age-based methods for calculating statutory redundancy payments and unfair dismissal payments will remain.
•Benefits which recognise length of service remain in place.
•Schemes to reward loyalty and experience also remain.
•The age discrimination in the workplace rules do not affect the age at which people can claim their state pension.

In addition, there are certain circumstances in which an employer can treat younger or older employees differently providing they can show that there is objective justification for this. For example, special provisions may be required in order to protect your health and safety if you are an older worker being employed by a construction company.
