I understand and agree with wearing them on a pushbike,but walking on the pavement its crazy.

It's not crazy...it would be crazy if it was a suit of armour or the arse end of a pantomime horse but it's not...it's just a lightweight hi-vis that you won't even notice you're wearing after 5 minutes.

Agreed. I perspire like like a pig wearing one on a hot day. But if you can't put up with a bit a sweat, why choose a physically demanding outdoors job?

Ask them to show you the national agreement that says you have to wear them on delivery. I don't believe there is one. It is the same as cycle helmets, these need to be worn on delivery only - if you ride the bike to and from home you don't have to. Your choice of course but remember the DIMs make up the rules as they go along and most of the time they get it wrong whilst threatening you with the conduct code.

We have i'm sure a report on here somewhere where a guy was either sacked/disciplined for not wearing the helmet when either coming into work or going home.

Your joking surely that cant be right? How can they discipline you for something like that outside work? I understand they can discipline you for doing something in your own time that reflects badly on the company like drug taking or being a nazi for instance. But not wearing a helmet in your own free time?

Am sure I have seen that report. Is it something to do with using an RM bike. Of course if it's your own bike then no problem

You are missing my point,its not about being hot its the fact that you have to wear a garment thats purpose is to enable a person to be easy to see in a hazardous enviroment such as a building site,airfield coal mine or some such place.I have successfully negoitated pavements for over 50 years without wearing one and I do not need to wear one to walk on the pavement or cross roads.

It's not designed to enable you to negotiate pavements.
It's designed to make it easier for other road users to see you.
The reason it has become more of an issue now than in the past is that the kind of roads we are crossing many times on a daily basis are far busier than they have ever been.
The days of empty roads between 9 and 5 are long gone.

It's designed to make it easier for other road users to see you.

If a person cannot safely cross a road they shouldn't be let out on their own,if the road isnt clear to cross why step out its not hard is it,take responsibility for your own safety.Wear do you draw the line? I have bumped my head on hanging baskets,caught my fingers in letterboxes and been bitten by dogs what do you suggest for these incidents ?

They dont breathe and in this weather i would argue they would increase your chances of heat exhaustion/ sunstroke.

Of course they breathe, they are loose fitting, have gaping holes for sleeves, a drop neck and placed over your eyes you can see well enough to negotiate a pavement. (although I wouldn't recommend it, its against Health & Safety)

If I had my way, the lads caught for a first offence of failing to wear one would be provided with a fluorescent pink one, to complement the trolley which they also refuse to use.
