Royal Mail is set to launch a home delivery service which will allow online shoppers the chance to have goods delivered to a secure, electronic parcel locker known as an iBox.
The service, which is being provided in conjunction with logistics firm ByBox, will be available from a select number of online retailers from this autumn as part of a six month trial.
iBoxes will initially be available at 17 mainline stations within London and six other key sites
Shoppers will be notified via email or SMS as soon as their items are delivered and will have 24/7 access to these items, which are collected by entering a unique PIN code provided in the SMS at the iBox.
Royal Mail is using an off-the-shelf package from MetaPack which takes care of all manifest, labelling and reporting changes to help deliver the iBox service.
The iBox delivery option will be available on the Royal Mail Tracked two to three day service so can be easily bolted on for retailers already offering this option.
The move follows a similar scheme on the continent. In Germany alone there are now almost 3,000 units deployed and 29 per cent of consumers have said the availability of these locker banks has increased their online purchasing.
Other postal administrations using locker banks include Norway, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, France, Poland and Turkey

There are over 82 million people in Germany. The scheme seems like a resounding success. No wonder Royal Mail are so keen to trial it.

Sounds like a good idea, the number of people that order stuff online and are never in is a nuisance and waste of everyones time, much better to be able to place it somewhere safe where they can collect at leisure rather than queuing for ages at their local DO!!

Yeh! they can wait in line at Christmas at the boxes while they try and access the locker after battling their way through the commuters trying to get on the trainsslave wrote:Sounds like a good idea, the number of people that order stuff online and are never in is a nuisance and waste of everyones time, much better to be able to place it somewhere safe where they can collect at leisure rather than queuing for ages at their local DO!!

As most people commute into London, they will have to take their purchase home on the train.
I don't think this has been thought through...........

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Wouldn't it be easier for the customer to have the stuff delivered to their workplace? Most if not all e-tailers have this option.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

2 years you've been a member but both your posts have been about your dismissal for 'wilful delay' but we really don't know any details about it.

As a regular on the packet sorting I can honestly say that loads of people are already doing this. Some of these customers work for some large, very well known, multi national companies who have offices in our delivery area.POSTMAN wrote:Wouldn't it be easier for the customer to have the stuff delivered to their workplace? I don't see this as a goer.
I could be wrong but i think their are easier ways to get something delivered.
I see a lot of people getting stuff delivered to relatives, that seems to be the way people get around the whole "at work" thing.

Re: Royal Mail trials locker home delivery service
how about a delivery b4 they go to work, say 6.45 to 9.00am. I know it sounds a bit ridiculous but actually delivering when the person is in might be something to think about.

Re: Royal Mail trials locker home delivery service
Sorry to say this but it is ridiculous. No chance of it happening for one very simple reason. We no longer have the ability to get the mail, packets or whatever up and ready for delivery because of later start times and lack of man power in the early hours. RM are highly unlikely to change back unless they are forced to or have a financial incentive.mailroyaly wrote:how about a delivery b4 they go to work, say 6.45 to 9.00am.
