Life is a lot easier for a ft postman on a regular walk to say a 20 hour pt spare!
Why FFS!!!! They both do the same job, only one gets paid 40 hrs and one gets paid 20 hrs
A f/t on their own walk knows where everyone lives.
They know the redirections. They know who has gone away.
They know how to tie it up.
They know where the drop boxes are and what number the keys are.
They know where the dogs are.
They know where the toilet facilities are on that walk.
Seniority normally means the f/t walks are easier - or they wouldn't have chosen them.
A f/t postie isn't reliant on someone else having done their prep fully and properly for them.
I can do my duty backwards with my eyes closed.

Not quite the same job is it?

Most of the things you have quoted Clash don't make the job easier...they make it quicker.
That might be relevant where Job&Finish still reigns supreme but where you are expected to work your hours it is of little consequence whether you know where the redirections are,who lives where or whether you have to rely on someone else to prep your walk.
The longer it takes to prep...the less time you have to deliver.
If we are using bad practice to decide whether a full-timer or a part-timer has it "easier" we really are screwed.
You're also linking number of contracted hours to seniority which is not really a fair comparison.

Why didn't you list the differences between a full-time reserve and a part-time reserve?
That would have given a fairer picture and not helped to reinforce the whole PT/FT divide.

I agree it would be less stressful, but am slightly envious that you have one long street with doors/letterboxes onto it.

Best job nowadays has to be the 20 hr PTers that have a Regular walk. :Very Happy We've a few in my office that don't want any Overtime, just need a PT job, probably to do with Tax Credits or Benefits.

Because they've said they won't work over their time, their walks are always Fully prepped and they just come in pick their 1st bag up and off they go, happy as Larry! :Applause

As you'd expect though, RM aren't happy that they've employed these guys on a PT contract, and they're actually happy doing it, they're always trying the make them do extra! :no no

Well now you know one who wouldn't go back. Glad I made the decision and jacked it in.

I think this is spot on to be honest. People would be right in saying that it doesnt matter if you just work your hours but in reality that doesnt happen does it? In my office you either complete or you just get constant s*** for the lino and DOM. Suppose theres also the issue of how do you know how long the walk is going to take you if you have never done it before?
fishtank wrote: You're also linking number of contracted hours to seniority which is not really a fair comparison.
This point is true i guess it would be fairer to say a senior postie would probably have a more positive view of the job then say a new starter due to being able to choose their walk. I know all walks are suppose to be equal but as a spare who has done shedloads of different walks i can tell you thats total bull.

That would have given a fairer picture and not helped to reinforce the whole PT/FT divide.
To be fair the post that clashcityrocker quoted was a comparison to a pt spare not a reserve. Personally i havnt met a spare ft who not only moves to different walks but also to different divisions. i feel that there is a ft / pt divide within the company as far as difficulty of work. But its not something we should be fighting over its just a money saving trick by RM thats out of our control. On paper we should all have equal rights and equal walks but you only have to look around at the last few people to leave the DO to see thats not the case.

I actually do. When I go through my old area once or twice a week and see my old colleagues still out at 4 or 5 pm and I know they ain't getting paid for it, I do feel for them. One, that they are mugs for doing it and two, they have Been bullied into it. Catch22. The Dom and his mini me hitler are grade A bullies and the union rep is crap there so they do have the run of things.
