No I assume you take a van home and unless you push or free wheel it, then you are using the vehicle and fuel that belongs to RM and whether you have a car or not is immaterial.
I don't dispute that the 'fuel belongs to RM' but if there's nowhere for the van to be parked at the Delivery Office what's the alternative ?
The fact that Royal Mail have nowhere to park the vehicle that belongs to them is not your problem. The alternative is for RM to find a suitable lock up area either leased or purchased for the excess vehicles to be secured and picked up daily as and when by postmen in their duty time and parked back in the lock up also in duty time. Of course the alternative RM would prefer is to let joe soap take it home and bring it back in to work in his own time, so much more cost effective don't you think

It suits them and it suits me, so I don't see what the problem is. :Very Happy except a few collegues envious that it costs them money to drive their own cars to and from work.

By playing footsie with RM and it's transport problems you are denying more work time to be carried out by postmen. A delivery that is 35 miles from the DO is a ridiculous state of affairs and should be looked at from another perspective, what happens on his day off for example, or goes sick..............

Our furthest delivery point from the DO is 40 miles. My DO probably has one of the largest areas in the country. I think it works out at 240 square miles. Unlike other offices where foot turns are the majority, we've got 40 rural drives (not easy ones either) and ten walks. One of our rurals is 102 miles a day.

Like I say It works well for the staff and RM and it's been like that for many years.
And what happens on his day off or when he goes sick?

So how does he get home when his day off is the next day? Taxi?

Trust me that is not going to happen at my DO. One of our lads lives on the duty 35 miles from the office. Royal mail are not going to shoot themselves in the foot by asking him to cut off an hour earlier than usual to bring the van back to the DO and then send someone else out on a 70 Mile round trip to cover that hour. As I said before the arrangement works well both for RM who gain an hours work and pay no extra in diesel and for the lads. This is only good for those who live on the duty. Everyone else has to find their own way in.

I wouldn't swap them. I'm at work in my own car in 6 minutes.

How wrong you are belive me iv'e been privvy to info that not only sugests but will enforce the vans remaining on r.m owned or rented land the soaring cost of fuel and the need to (or want) to conform for the utopian professor security of mails etc....

Mind you axeman when the livery changes maybe they won't care who's driving round in the vans or where they are parked with or without mail in them. Which brings the question of what do they do with the mail that cannot be delivered like parcels and specials et al? The van is merely one aspect of the problem.

'Remaining on RM land' - impossible when there's no space to park them.
'security of mails' - no problem, you've returned undelivered items to the callers office before driving the van home. :Very Happy

That is the problem you see, here's this guy 35 miles away from his DO, now in order to save petrol, allegedly, he returns home so does he drive the 35 miles back to hand in non-delivered items and then drive the 35 miles back or leave them in the van til the next day :hmmmm would that not be an increase in mileage.
