Very wise, then I have heard so many wise words in my lifetime - I was actually on parade on the route of Churchills funeral in 1965 - that was history I suppose, now what did I learn from that........ .................give me time I'm sure I'll come up with something. Now how do we evaluate history? How far back do we go to judge the relevance..........1 year, 2, 10, a generation, a lifetime, a century........more?

Come now DV, don't you appreciate what a noble gesture it was for a load of Ox-bridge students to go and stick thier idealistic noses into Spain's internal politics in the 1930s, and how relevant thier "sacrifice" was?

Most of them were smart enough to know what was coming for Britain, and the rest of Europe, if a democratically elected government was successful overturned by fascists. And they were right. Unlike the clowns, both east and west, who took an 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' attitude and ended up very nearly seeing all of Europe fall to fascism. These people weren't 'knob-ends', they were fighting for at least a scrap of the freedom we enjoy today.

In a nutshell
our grandparents fought for basic rights such as work-breaks ,that we have taken for granted.
now "thatchers children" (as i call them) are eroding them.
unions are like the new Jews !........... A totally spurious comment ?
Think about it ..to a monetarist the unions are to blame for most of industries inefficiency's, for slowing the pace of change
for stifling employers with health and safety requirements and for driving up inflation, (with their unreasonable living wage demands),

Dave Cameron despises unions despite their democratic roots,whilst the press are complicit in the creation of modern scapegoats.
Disrespecting and ignoring unions is anti democratic which is ironic while he (Dave) stands on such a slim majority.

And most of them where miners ,which I think you would admit is not the usual career path of Oxbridge graduates. Thankfully the British secret service logged their ID's and monitored their activities and communications ever after. So it seems now anyone with a bent to check up on facts can find out just how many Jesus professors bit the bullet at Guernica.
