VILLAGERS are planning a petition to get their postbox back.

Six weeks ago the mail box outside the Village Stores in Penrhynside was demolished when a vehicle hit it, and since then residents have been forced to travel into Penrhyn Bay to post their letters.

Royal Mail say they are willing to replace the box but have had difficulty in finding a suitable location, as they think the one outside the shop is now too dangerous.

But Cath Sumbland, who owns the Village Stores, says the box had been in the same spot for 25 years without mishap.

“Until six weeks ago it hadn’t been so much as touched by a vehicle and there has never been an accident involving anyone using it.

“There is no good reason at all why it can’t go back there,” she claimed.

She said not having a postbox was causing great inconvenience to the elderly and infirm.

“The next nearest box is outside the doctor’s surgery in Penrhyn Bay, at the bottom of Penrhyn Hill which is very steep, and for those who can’t drive it’s very difficult to get there.

“Last week one lady told me she had to get on a bus to post a letter which is ridiculous,” she complained.

Mrs Sumbland said she had made several calls to Royal Mail asking for the box to be reinstated.

“A man came out to look at it and said it was too dangerous to put it back in the same spot, which is ridiculous.

“He suggested putting it outside the village hall but that’s also up a steep hill which is not suitable for the elderly.

“We’re going to get a petition to get it back in the same place,” she said.

But a Royal Mail spokeswoman said they had encountered difficulties in replacing the box outside the shop.

“We visited the original site where the postbox was located but after investigation we decided that with the narrow access and the volume of traffic, plus the discovery of underground obstructions, we could no longer consider this site for a replacement postbox.

“We have, however, located a more suitable site near to the village hall and we are proposing to site the box in this location,” she said.

Don't they think to hand the letters to their regular postman ? - normal practice in rural areas I thought. :Very Happy
