A NORTHUMBERLAND Post Office has been recognised for its business-boosting attitude with an award.
Corbridge Post Office, based inside The Paper Shop on Princes Street, was handed a gong for The North of England’s Most Improved Post Office at a ceremony last week.
Post Office chiefs say the branch is a prime example of how the organisation can hold its own in the modern high street.
Owner Karen Harkness, 48, has spoken of her pride after a peak in sales she says is down to the commitment of staff and loyalty of customers.
She said: “We were selected to join a new training programme because of our commitment and desire to enhance the level of service for customers, and it certainly paid off for we have recently won an award for most improved Post Office at a ceremony called the best of the best.
“Since completing the training programme we have become top Post Office versus target out of 40 others in the north of England.”
Mrs Harkness took over The Paper Shop from her father, John Graham, now 72, 20 years ago. The branch offers the full range of Post Office services, including credit cards, insurance, currency exchange and banks accounts.
Based on its sales, it was voted the best out of all branches in the North of England to clinch the title.
Mrs Harkness paid tribute to her team, which includes business development manager Janet Cullen.
She added: “It is great. We are enamoured. Before the training got under way lots of people were unaware of the services available from this Post Office.
“I am always delighted at the loyalty of our strong band of supporters, particularly those customers who always use the Post Office for cash withdrawals and E-Top Ups.
“It is those customers who ensure that their Post Office remains a viable business.
“The Paper Shop has been in the hands of the Graham family for generations and the Post Office has been operating from here for the last 14 years.
“I would like to thank my colleagues Carol Noble, Karin Parker and Margaret Thompson for their tremendous support.”
A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail Group said: “All our staff give an excellent service to customers, however particular praise goes to the staff at Corbridge Post Office for their efforts.”
