Strike action to defend Royal Mail jobs

A Coventry postal worker

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) recently announced its intention to hold a national strike ballot if any postal worker, anywhere in the country, is made compulsorily redundant. This is to be welcomed as Royal Mail, under the stewardship of new boss Moya Greene, seems intent on ripping up the agreement it signed up to just a year ago.

This new business plan includes the closure of half of the mail centres around the country, which will lead to compulsory redundancies. This is contrary to last year's agreement. And it won't end with mail centre closures.

CWU members can learn from the stand of the four unions taking action on 30 June. We need to be unified in action against the planned attacks on all our jobs. And we need our union leaders to begin to coordinate action with other unions whose members face attacks on their jobs, pay, conditions and the services they provide.

We face a further attack on our pensions if Royal Mail is privatised. We were shunted onto an inferior pension scheme two years ago and the CWU leaders accepted it. This was unforgivable. It's down to members to put pressure on the leadership to allow us to take action in order to defend ourselves from all attacks.

Striking does work if it is done properly, but as we can see, the guidence from the CWU has been absolutely crap, they've never had a black and white agenda, all this "local level crap will deal with whatever attitude" is not good enough, they've done nothing for the workforce and given so much away in the last the 2 years its unbelievable.

One more f**k up and i'm out of the CWU for good!

I still cannot get over the last debacle.
I ask myself, is this a job worth fighting for?
And each time, my heart tells me no.
It's a stressfull, physically demanding, crap occupation, with little or no reward.
We slave for a management that is stuck on a cost-cutting merry-go-around, with no sign at all of ever coming off.
My back aches, my feet aches, my arms ache.
I go to bed feeling dog tired, I get up feeling dog tired, I work feeling dog tired, I go home feeling dog tired, I go to bed feeling dog tired, and so it goes, on and on and on, relentless in the absence of any sort of mercy whatsoever.
Nah, I will not strike to protect that, no way. :so there

A sponge wet from Greek Fire was a particularly damaging weapon - not even a lefty like me thinks a strike could be measured as effective as that.

What a coincidence you dismiss the article based on its source. Others do the same for posts on here. Its human nature, I suppose with free speech you get the freedom to ignore :hmmmm :hmmmm
