If people are forced to work on even a couple of years that will remove another huge number of jobs from the market
Where will the jobs be for those that come after us?
This is a very complex issue without doubt. Job share, reduced working week either in hours or days but come hell or high water the pension issue has got to be solved or we will have a nation of elderly people eking out their last years in poverty. Pensions need to increase in line with inflation over the coming years as an interim measure until savings/increased pension contributions make up the shortfall. What level of contribution would be necessary I wouldn't know and it is debatable if there would ever be total independence from state aid for the forseeable future.

If anyone thinks a general strike is the answer to, not just Royal Mails problems, but the national problems they are sadly misguided. This recession is a reality, pensions too need to be addressed because people are living longer, proof of which is the number of BP Specials we now deliver on a weekly basis. If there was to be a survey of 65 year olds today most would probably say they would work on, albeit in a reduced capacity.
Said DavidvukCameron.
Yes highly amusing, however the issues will not be solved by a general strike but by addressing the issues at hand. Unless of course you have already hit upon the solution, if so, please share it.

I'm with a guy called Ray who wrote the following:-

Dear Mr. Cameron,

Please find below our suggestion for fixing the UK's economy.

Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the
money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 10 million people over 50 in the work force.

Pay them £1 million each severance for early retirement with the
following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire.
Ten million job openings - unemployment fixed

2) They MUST buy a new British car.
Ten million cars ordered - Car Industry fixed

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed

4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university -
Crime rate fixed

5) They MUST buy £100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .....
And there's your money back in duty/tax etc

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back
their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances

If you think this would work, please forward to everyone you know.

Also.....
Let's put the pensioners in jail and the criminals in a nursing home.

This way the pensioners would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.

They'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical
treatment, wheel chairs etc and they'd receive money instead of paying
it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped
instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed
and returned to them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and
snacks to their cell.

They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual
counselling, pool and education.

Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ's and legal aid would be free, on request.

Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens.

Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards
would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to.

The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised.
Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room and
pay £600.00 per week and have no hope of ever getting out.

Think about this (more points of contention):

COWS
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad
cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Appleby
almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the
county of Cumbria?

And, they even tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable
to locate 125,000 illegal immigrants wandering around our country.
Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

Also; Think about this ... If you don't want to forward this for fear
of offending someone -- YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM! It is time for us
grumpy old folk of Britain to speak up! :dcfo :ncfo :vcfo

seems to me , this idea that we are all living to these ripe old ages may not be quite so true ? and has a lot to do with where we live etc.
can anyone else deduce from these figures [ obtained from the NOS ] that something else might have a big influence in determining how long we live past 65?
the people at the top table in the main , are responsible for the excessives of the Capitalist System which has plunged us into this mire and yet they still carry on with their same ideology while expecting the rest of us to bail them out. on top of that they now want us to work longer and harder for less . now i dont need to be a leftie or whatever to know they are taking the piss ...

It does seem that some perpetuate untruths of the tabloid press without even checking yet a week later will rubbish the papers. :so there

Duvbuk55 is right on a strike achieving nowt. The blunter chisels in the box will be getting their flasks and scarves already, even though it got them nowhere last time. No shame in that, but nothing to be gained either.

Not if you read his post, because it's the old folk in prison and I would think the care staff in the rest home would have an easy time, there would be no sheet changes because the prisoners would have buggered off within minutes.
