However the question was can you be sacked if you are slow. I answered yes in my opinion...How far do go to let people do nothing at work...

There is a fundamental difference between being slow and doing nothing.
You cannot tell the difference as you have confused the issue.
Managers have the same problem.

Who is the laziest?
Someone who does 2 hours work in 2hrs or someone who does 2hrs work in 1hr and sits on their arse for an hour.
Some of the "fastest" posties in my D.O. are some of the laziest...and some of the dumbest.
If you can do 2hrs work in 1hr...why not give you 4hrs work and see if you can do it in 2hrs.
And...we are where we are.

Surely there are jobs which cannot be measured per se. I mean we used to have a couple of lads who crushed cardboard boxes and stamped surcharge and 739s with the address etc...............now they were from the local special needs organisation and were officially "slow" - they used to be paid out of petty cash, merely a nominal sum................should they not have been "employed".

True, that was when this organisation had some humanity but there must still be room for those who are capable but not overly quick, who need time to consider things before any movement takes place. What is easy for some is not necessarily the case for everyone.
