'Darth Vader' boss may face strike over cuts

Postal union CWU has warned of strike action over claims by Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene that 40,000 jobs needed to be cut to make the company financially viable.

In an interview with the right-wing Daily Mail on Thursday Ms Greene argued that as traditional "snail-mail" was declining by 5 per cent a year, the workforce should be slashed to "save" the business.

Ms Greene was transferred from Canada to Britain after playing a major role in the wrecking of that country's postal service and earning the name of "Darth Vader" from the unions there in the process.

She told the paper: "In a declining core letters business, when we are struggling to take sorting capacity out of the Royal Mail, the likelihood is that it will be smaller in five years than today."

She then suggested that 40,000 more jobs should go in the postal service.

CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "This is the first that we've heard of plans for further job losses.

"There is no agreement over these job cuts and the announcement puts the whole programme of modernisation at risk.

"We will protect our members' jobs and conditions of work and any hint of compulsory redundancies would lead to an immediate nationwide ballot for industrial action."

Mr Ward added: "Royal Mail claims that 65,000 jobs have been cut since 2002.

"We would question whether the company could continue to function as the main mail delivery company if further job cuts are pushed through.

"The impact on operations and services would be severe."

Because she was not employed to make profit. She was employed to decimate the workforce. One of the easiest jobs in the world for a hard faced, couldn,t give a sh.t about society b.tch, in the mould of Mrs T. 5500 gone in the last year @ say £25k taking into account pensions and employers NI. A saving of £137,500000 on the wage bill. Her bonus aprox 0.1% if my maths is correct. At that rate if she gets rid of another 40,000 assuming the same maths she should pocket another £9999625 or rounded up £1 million squid on top of her annual salary of £495000 per annum. Not bad for someone who has carved up the Canadian Post. Next stop US Postal service prior to a happy retirement in Canada.
